Hallo, I just bought a Back-UPS HS 500 (BH500NET) a few days ago.and am having all kinds of problems getting it to communicate with my beast. First off, I am connected to a wireless network, so the only network cable going to the UPS is the crossover cable going from my beast's legacy LAN port to the LAN port on the UPS. This seems kind of stupid that you have to create a network for this to talk to the computer. Anyhow, The beast and the UPS seem to have a connection....of sorts. The ACT/LNK and TX/RX lights are on and I can ping the unit. One thing immediately struck me as wierd is that the link speed is measuring at only 10Mbps. And if I open the APC HS Utility, there is only an option to view the MAC address (which does match the label on the unit) and the IP. Currently it is set to automatically aquire the IP adress, but nothing I enter for a manual IP address works. The "UPS SETTINGS" button is there, but is not available. I have come to the conclusion that the problem is that my beast is looking for a DHCP unit, whereas the UPS can only act as a DHCP client. There seem to be very few ways around this, and the UPS doesn't seem to like any of them. Any ideas? OS is XP Pro (32-bit)
Thanks for your help,
-Rob

By installing the supplied v1.0 – Configuration/Management Software, you can configure a Static IP for the device. It's also important to note that the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are not user configurable. I also don't believe Telnet will work with this unit. The BH500NET's overall functionality is limited.

I am assuming the beast is your computer? If you are going direct to the BH unit with a xover cable, the BH unit will not be able to get an IP address from your machine unless it's running some type of DHCP server and I notice you mention you are running XP which would not have one. You will need a static IP address on your hardwired LAN adapter and the BH unit. Both of these addresses should have the same IP scheme, IP's on the same subnet, same mask and gateway. This should allow your computer to communicate with the BH unit. The only potential problem I see is a conflict when accessing the BH unit not knowing which IP address assigned to the computer to use for the access (it will have 2, one for the wireless connection and one for the wired.) To confirm if that is the issue, you would try disabling your wireless adapter and re-accessing the BH unit.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I've been working with APC tech support. They've had some great ideas, but we still haven't been able to pinpoint the problem. I pretty sure that the problem lies within my network, but it's hard to tell which part of it (firewall, hardware, settings, etc.) APC is sending me another UPS unit to rule out that aspect. One of the first things they had me try was using the ARP in the command prompt, here is how that went down:
-----
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert>arp -s 192.168.100.1 00-c0-b7-25-6e-c2
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert>ping 192.168.100.1 -L 113
Pinging 192.168.100.1 with 113 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for 192.168.100.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert>telnet 192.168.100.1

My networking skills are a bit rusty, but from this, I got the impression that my firewall was interfering, but I disabled it and got the same results. I have the range of 192.168.100 assigned to my onboard LAN. The network connection itself is assigned the following numbers:
IP address: 192.168.100.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.0
