Unplugging UPS

I have an ES series 500VA 300 Watt UPS for my following computer setup:

Opteron 165 dual core cpu
geforce 7800GT
2 MB Corsair memory
550Watt Rosewill Power Supply
19" BenQ Monitor

My first question is, when I unplug the UPS, the battery does not take over, but it will switch to battery is there is some noise etc. How can I keep it on battery if I unplug it for a few seconds (if I knock it out by accident for example)?

Second question is I get the red light saying there is a wiring fault. Can you go more in depth into what that means? Thanks!

When I pull it from the wall, it just turns off, however it went to battery back up a few times with no issues (from what it calledd a blackout and some noise). It does not make any noises or anything when the plug is pulled either. I'm using powerchute 1.5 at the moment as well. I'll have to try and unplug it from the wall without anything and see what happens. However from what I read from other peoples confgurations that this UPS would be good enough. The configurator shows my power draw @ 250 watts.

Should I return this UPS and get a higher one? My system config says I only require 250Watts...

Hello,

Chances are you are slightly undersized due to the cpu and the monitor. Your UPS should switch to battery but it may only hold the load for a small amount of time. I would recommend getting a UPS at the 700-1000VA range.
