I have just purchased an APC BE550G-UK UPS. It is for my Windows Home Server machine to protect its data from power cuts and spikes. On the arrival of the UPS I connected the battery, powered the computer down, connected everything as per instructions, started the computer, the found new hardware wizard started and identified the UPS as "unknown device" I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer but it still refuses to recognize the UPS. I plugged the USB lead into a laptop running Vista and it was instantly recogized as APC UPS. I see an unresolved thread earlier in the year were the poster had the same problem and had heard of connectivity problems with non Intel chipsets. My WHS has an AMD Athlon 64 with an Nvidia chipset were as the laptop is a Celeron with an Intel chipset.

Hello, the system consists of a Asrock ALiveNF6G-VSTA motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor 1.5GB DDR2 ram motherboard chipset is Nvidia MCP61 it has 4 SATA2 HDDs connected it is running Windows Home Server with power pack 3 (Winver 5.2 build 3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.090805-1438 : service pack 2) my UPS is a BE550G-UK I have not got Powerchute installed as the installer quits saying not UPS is connected. When I look in device manager the UPS is listed as an "unknown device" I have tried updating and uninstalling the driver to no effect. When I connected the UPS to a laptop running Vista SP2 it was recognized straight away.

Think I have fixed it, must be some incompatability issue between the Nvidia chip USB and the UPS. Have fitted an add on USB card with a VIA chip, powered up installed drivers, rebooted, plugged in UPS and recognition. I see it is possible to configure a shutdown from Windows power properties, what is the advantage of installing Powerchute? From the web site they list Ver. 2.2 as being the one for WHS, has anyone any experience of this?

Good day Malcolm,
Using PCPE over the Native Power Options of Windows gives the user the following:
# PCPE provides a user with the current status of the UPS and the outlet where it is connected.
# Enables the user to perform self-test on the UPS using the software.
# Provides report on the different power problems it has detected and how many times it occurred.
# Provides the ability to enable/disable battery backup alarms.
# Using the software, the customer can also adjust the settings on the UPS such as Sensitivity and Voltage thresholds.
# Provides information regarding the UPS Serial Number, Firmware and the Operating System type etc.
