UPS fan revving up and down.

I have an older UPS model from before 2010. Two years ago, the fan started to rev up and down constantly. After replacing the battery with a new one, it stopped doing this.

Two years later, it is starting to do this again. However, I do not understand why the battery would end up going this soon. I do not feel like replacing it right now.

Would there be any danger to using the UPS in this state? The fan noise does not bother me too much, I usually have headphones on.

The UPS does say it is at event 104, if that means anything. There is no indication that the battery needs to be replaced (it never told me this before, though, when it did need to be replaced) and it is not running on battery.

The surge-only sockets work without the unit being turned on... is it OK use those in the meantime?

Yes. The unit will still provide surge protection.

If the unit is pre 2010 that means it's a minimum 10 years old so looking at a replacement would be a good idea.

I unplugged it for a few hours and after that it seemed to be fine.
However, while being on the computer, the UPS shut off and emitted a continuous beep with an error of F01.
I looked this up and it seems to be related to an overload and the battery could not hold it. But, I do not see how that could be possible since the computer only has a 520 watt PSU and it was idlish at the desktop (I only had a video player open with nothing playing at the time). The only other thing plugged into it was the LCD monitor. I have never seen the load even reach half.
This UPS is rated 1500VA and 865watts. It is a Back-Ups RS 1500 from pre-2010.
I guess it is old and should probably be replaced. Not something I can do immediately.
The surge-only sockets work without the unit being turned on... is it OK use those in the meantime? I do not like using it without the battery feature... but it will be a while before I will be able to replace the unit or battery.
It is unplugged from the wall now with all the stuff unplugged from it. I will try seeing if it will work later, but I am afraid of it going off again while I am on the PC.
