SmartUPS 1500 does not power on after battery change

Smart UPS 1500: 'Replace Battery' light came on and so I replaced the battery. When I turned it on 'Replace Battery' light was still on. I disconnected it from power outlet and then connected it again. Now it does not turn on any more when I press (I). I have tried pressing reset button at the back, but it made no difference.
1 month ago there was 'AVR time no longer active' message repeating in the APC Event log. The unit is over 5 years old. What do you think is the problem? Is the main control board gone bad?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Mohsin Ladha

have you tried to reconnect the battery? do you have the original battery to try? AVR refers to automatic voltage regulation for boosting or trimming incoming voltage. i don't think its related and is just a notification.

one thing to try with either of the batteries, once battery connections are verified, is to coldstart the unit. you'll need to disconnect the UPS from AC power and then hold down the test ( | ) button and wait for two beeps, letting go of the button during the second beep. this will attempt to start the UPS off of its own battery.
