Hello,
currently im at work and i have found an APC Smart UPS 700 eating dust in a corner.
When i first wanted to powerup it wasnt responding at all...
So i pulled out the battery's and replaced with ones who have the same voltage.
Nouw the ups starts up and does its self test which apperantly passes.
I have let the battery's charge for almost 3,5 hours and then pulled the plug for a simple test (no load attached)
The ups powers down and doesnt anything anymore.
I measured the values of the outputs:
Normal (plugged into wall) 230V
Selftest 235 V
Cold start: 178 V
So the only strange reading is when i try to start the unit with a cold start and not plugged in the wall.
When i try to start here up with no external power i see a short flash of alle the lights and a beep and then it goes sillent.
Holding the poweron button in this case will cause another beep.
Can someone help me out on this one?

Hi Johan,
It appears to me that the battery is not in good condition. How long the battery which you used to replace the original battery had been stored or How old Is it? If you have another identical UPS with good known battery, then swap the batteries and see if the unit in question works fine.
In case if you do not have another good battery to test it, then my advice for you is to upgrade the unit to a new unit by trading it instead of replacing the battery if it is pretty old.

Techie,
Im at work today and i put the UPS on the test bench again.
There seems to have been a problem with it last week so i connected him again today en meassured again..
The results for the battery arnt promising i can tell you.
Normal running: 230 V
Test run: 243 V
Start on battery: 1,345 V
So it seems the ups simply doenst deliver any power when its off..
The battery was 12,3 V and is in fine condition according to a battery test preformed here.
The battery was stored for about 4 months here.
So i hope its still repaireble.
Cheers,E

Johan,
The best way to check the battery condition is to perform a self test on the UPS. The UPS Performs the self test at start up and every 14 days automatically to check the battery integrity. The voltage reading may not give the exact condition of the battery. You can perform the self test manually by pressing the Test button until you hear two beeps with normal load attached. If the UPS fails the test, the Solid Replace Battery light will come on when the unit is plugged into the AC power.
Let me ask a question from you...
Is the UPS powering the equipment when the unit is plugged into the wall outlet? If it does, then I assume that the UPS is working normally when there is power from the wall?
If the battery looses its capacity suddenly as soon as the unit is unplugged from the wall, then I suspect that the battery in question may need to replace it with a new battery.

Techie,
Once more thank you for trying to help me out!
The test you describe is a success when no load is attached. I need to try it with a load i try to perform a test in the morning.
Yes load is powerd when the ups is plugged in the wall.
I'm gonna replcace the battery this week to see if it has effect.
Cheers,E

i discussed the matter with an expert on the place where i work.
We have tested the battery's that went in and the only conclusion was that the battery's wehere ok.
Changed the battery's but still no effect.
What to do next??

Johan,
Did you replace with same AH battery? Could you please let me know the exact model number of the UPS? What lights are on the front of the UPS when it is plugged in?
You mentioned that the UPS output voltage was 178 V when you did the cold start. What lights were on the front of the UPS when it started after the cold start? Did you use a true RMS voltmeter to read the UPS output voltage?

Hello Techie,
replace with same type of battery:
No the battery that came out was a 12 V 7.2 AH and the ones who got back in where 12V 7.0 AH..
I dont know if that 0.2 AH makes a huge difference. The battery went in and the bar on the right showed two stripes.
At the end of the day all the stripes on the right where lit.
Lights front:
When i plug it in i hear a beep and see all the lights flash once.
When i press the on button i get the bar wich indicates the battery power flashing. and a flashing light indicating its on external power (symbol with the synus)
When the flashing stops the things mentioned above are constantly lit.
Then the front indicates that the load is on battery by the mid yellow light on the right. this goes with a loud click and the sound of power (dont know how to put it else)
After a few seconds it the yellow light disappears and the green lights keep on burning
exact model number:
Hmmm you would have to wait till tuesday as i wont return until then.
Cold start:
i try to get it cold started... It just doenst power up.
When i press the on switch i see all the lights flash once on the front and a beep.
When i keep on pressing the button i can measure a 178V on the outlet. after a few seconds a second beep sounds.
After that it keeps quite
And yes its a fully capable and calibrated meter 🙂
Hope i gave you enough info!

Johan,
Thanks for the information. I also do not think that 0.2 Ah difference will make any difference. For your Kind information, APC does not recommend installing a third party battery into the UPS.
I suspect that the battery in the unit has not charged fully yet by the unit. I recommend you to charge the UPS overnight and then check if it helps. If the battery is fully charged, you will see the five battery bar graph lights at the right side of the unit. Once it is fully charged, check if the unit powers the equipment fine when it is plugged in and on battery mode.
Please feel free to let me know the outcome.

Hello Techie,
Thank you for the information youre providing...
The battery graph was full yesterday.. when you did a test the bar would lose 1 stripe...
Could it mean the battery's arnt good anymore??
In other words do i need to place the thing back on AC on tuesday or do you recomend to change the battery?
Cheers,E
