I have a couple of SMT1500 build date 2014.
UPS Frimware1: UPS 08.8
UPS Firmware2: MCU 17.0
UPS Firmware3: UBL 08.5
UPS Firmware4: MBL 17.0
I am trying to figure out what the latest firmware is for them is but there is no ID: in the about screen on them. So far after the digging I have done, it seems like the best way to update them is by getting a network management card for them. I am unsure if you can actually update them using the build in USB port of RJ45 port. Any help would be appreciated.

The UPS ID can be found using the following if available / present:
LCD, NMC, FUW, SNMP, Power Chute.
The following APC Firmware Resource guide will outline all the requirements and caveats to understand and follow:
https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA164737/
If this hardware is under APC Warranty this process should be completed live over the phone with APC Technical Support.
If this hardware is not under warranty you better have a solid backup plan and exit strategy. As the firmware update process can brick a perfectly working system and leave you with a large paper weight! ☝️
You’ll need the original RJ50 -> RS232 proprietary serial cable that came with the unit or one you bought or made and validated to work.
Do not attempt to use the NMC / USB port to upgrade the UPS firmware. Lastly, search this forum / internet as to how many APC UPS have been damaged / bricked just this year by a firmware upgrade. 🤦♂️
