Replace Battery Blinking, Random Chirping

I've got a Back-UPS RS 900 that just started randomly chirping and blinking the Replace Battery light.  It has done this several times today and logged several battery disconnected messages at the same time.

Is this yet another brain dead APC product, or is there some way to fix it?

This situation means the battery is disconnected (or the UPS thinks so). This can happen when it is physically disconnected or when it gets older and the voltage is below a certain level so that the UPS thinks its disconnected.

Assuming the battery is older, it just means to replace the battery and what you saw (load drop) when the UPS goes to battery indicates the battery is no good any longer. Sometimes it can be a problem with the UPS battery detection mechanism too if it is a brand new battery and does the same thing.
