I just bought and installed a Back-UPS NS 1250 and installed the PowerChute software that came with it. Before I installed the software, Windows Vista automatically detected that I had a UPS connected to my computer and gave me a nice little battery gauge icon in my system tray. I also had personalized power settings that I was using via Windows Power Options.
After installing APC PowerChute, my system tray icon has disappeared (I don't like the one PowerChute replaced it with) and my power settings are all screwed up. I don't want to use PowerChute, so I uninstalled it. However now I cannot turn the Windows power icon back on in the system tray (it's greyed out) and my windows power profiles still don't work! Please help, what has PowerChute done to my computer to disable these functions, and how do I turn them back on?

Luna,
You might have not uninstalled the PCPE software completely. I recommend you to call in phone/e-support to know if you have completely uninstalled the software from your computer. Once you have uninstalled the software properly, you should be able to configure the Windows vista Power Options.
You may try the following steps to re-detect the UPS via the USB cable.
Plug the RJ45 to USB cable between the UPS data port and the Computer USB port
Go to Device Manager
Remove the cable (device manager will re-populate)
Then add the usb cable (device manager will re-populate)...then keep an eye for the new device added.
Then you want to right click on it, hit uninstall.
It will remove it
Then reconnect the USB cable and it will try to re-install all the drivers needed.
The following links to Microsoft documents should help in configuring these native Vista options:

I hope that this helps. Please let me know your findings.
