I have an old PB500UC back-up pro that I purchased years ago and has been stored for a number of years. I recently decided to see if it had any life in it however when I plug it in it will not power up. The battery was removed prior to it being stored so obviously the battery is no longer viable.
My question is will this unit turn on without a battery in the circuit? If memory serves me there were some APC back-up units built around the same time as the PB500UC that would not turn on if a battery was not in the circuit. If this is the case can I simulate a battery by using a 12 VDC power supply to mimic the battery in the circuit to see if the unit turns on? I'm just trying to establish if this is a working unit and worth a new battery.
I contacted tech support but the person I spoke to had absolutely no idea of what I was asking and could only offer what she read on a computer screen which wasn't much except to keep saying I should purchase a new unit so much for tech support.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Since we have establish that the unit needs a battery to turn on can I use a 12 vdc power supply on the battery leads to make the UPS think there is a battery installed in the circuit?

Hi William,
This unit needs a good battery to turn on. The unit should pass power through the surge only outlets though, regardless if the unit is on or off.
Regards,
Mike
