New Back-Ups BR1000G

Have followed all instructions to start up the new unit.  It will not turn on.  The AC plug works, the battery is properly installed (even removed it and replaced it using the APC video), I have tried the circuit reset and the unit has been plugged in for 24 hours.  When I press the "On" button, there is either no response or a brief flash of light.  Do I assume the battery is defective?

I found advice to take the battery out for 5 minutes.  That worked.
