Help! I Did something stupid

I recently bought an APC BE350R. I got everything plugged in, and the PowerChute software installed, and all appeared to be well. Then I accidentally hit the power button (DOH!) on the UPS, which cut the power to my PC. When I booted back into windows, I kept getting a RUNDLL message box saying: "Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\APC\APC The specified module could not be found." This appears ever couple seconds or so (I keep clicking OK to get rid of it).

Thinking an uninstall/reinstall might fix it, I uninstalled PowerChute (which DID stop the messages), rebooted, and reinstalled. At which point the message boxes came back.

An important clue here is the message I got while uninstalling: "An option you selected requires that files be installed to or uninstalled from your system or both. A locked file, c:\Programs Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\, was found while performing the needed file operations. To leave this file as it is on your system, click the Ignore button; to retry the file operation, click Retry; or to perform the operation when your system is rebooted, click Reboot."

I chose to ignore, and kept going, then deleted the entire APC directory later. As I mentioned before the message boxes came back after a reboot and re-install.

Can anyone tell me how to un-break whatever I broke?

Thanks

You may have to do a manual uninstall. It might be best to call tech support @ 1-800-800-4272 to have someone walk you through that process.

the OS is Windows XP SP2, updated regularly. Thanks for the responses, I'll call the 800 number and post the result.

I hope you got the answer you were looking for. However, just in case, I do know of a document on this error that simply requires you to remove any spaces from the installation path.

"Once you are prompted for the installation directory, change the path so that there are no spaces or change the name of the install directory. An example of an installation path is below: "

C:\ProgramFiles\APC\APCPPE

This should clear it up!

Thanks for that EZ Button. I just gave it a different install directory and the problem was gone. Should have thought of that before. Not sure if its because of the issue you mentioned or just because its in a different place, but if its fixed, it doesn't matter. Saves me a support call. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you're using Windows XP, you may want to try using System Restore to restore to the point right before the incident.
