Do I need to install and use APC's software to control my 2 years old UPS?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/3/2012

Hello.

Earlier, I had a small power outage that lasted about 30 seconds but my new updated 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise Edition SP1 office Lenovo PC went to sleep right away with my two years old UPS. My former (no longer have it) 2.5 years old Dell Studio XPS 8000 PC, with its updated 64-bit W7 HPE, did not do this a few weeks ago but it had APC UPS software installed. Is it because the missing APC software on my new PC or something else? I checked my W7's power settings settings and it looked OK (5 minutes to sleep monitor and 10 minutes to put PC to sleep).

Thank you in advance. 🙂

do you know how much total runtime on battery you should get with this UPS?

when you checked the Power Options in control panel, did what you see for 5 minutes to sleep/10 minutes for hibernate, was that for "On battery" versus "Plugged in" as noted in my screenshot?
I think I figured out what happened. In W7's power saving details, battery makes my computer sleep and wake up with a password AFTER power AC returns even if there is plenty of battery juice left (about an hour). I adjusted and retested with UPS' power cord. Now, it works. I don't know why it was like that. Maybe IT misconfigured it?
