Backups ES 500 Chirps and Flashes

My Backups ES 500 is flashing red about 2-3 times per second, and is chirping quickly, twice (chirp-chirp) every 3 seconds.

The chirp is not the same beeping sound I hear when it is on battery backup.

Seems this may be a re-charging problem?

The user manual does not mention chirps.
I have 3 leds:
1) The red one - not labeled, is the one flashing, 2-3 times per second .
2) The Power ON (Green) is not lit (it is initally, but after about a minute goes oiut and the chirping and flashing start)
3) Replace Battery (not lit)

John,

This symptom appears to be an internal fault in the unit. However, let me collect some information from you to verify if this issue can be fixed. Provide me the exact model number of the UPS. You can find it on a white bar code sticker at the bottom of the unit. Please verify the battery wires are attached to the battery terminals firmly. If possible, reconnect the battery to the battery wires. Make sure that the UPS circuit breaker is not tripped.
Is the outlet fine?

I installed the apcupsd for opensuse 11.0 and the gapcmon.
It appears one of the cells is dead as the voltage is reading at 10.6VDC.

I have had this UPS for just over 3 years.

I am due for a larger UPS anyway, so I am upgrading to the APC BACK-UPS RS 1500VA LCD 120V.

The user manual did not specify these indications as to being a partially dead battery.

But it appears to be so.

Tks anyway.

JC
