My batteries (originals) went south in my Back UPS XS a few months ago (one actual started bulging and has a crack running down on of the ends, exposing white powder). I removed them and didn't get around to ordering new batteries until a week ago. Received the new batteries, plugged them in, had a green light on the UPS until a day later when I found both the overload and the replace battery lights flashing. I've tried removing the batteries to reset the unit, but right after turning it on it goes back to flashing lights. Checked the batteries with a multimeter, each reads 6.5V, so not the expected 12V each battery should have... I did a search and found a similar thread where the answer was the internals being toast:

I'm not sure how old the unit it, it's probably out of warranty... but c'mon, it doesn't last past the first set of batteries? I would be very reluctant to my money on another APC unit at this point. I wrote down the serial number in case there's any way to see if the unit might still be covered.
