Back-UPS XS 1000 - First an F04 error message; then after some time, not even able to power on

I bought a Back-UPS XS 1000 (serial # 3B1304X23063) about 4 months ago, and after working fine for that time, it started beeping with a warning message. I eventually saw an error message numbered F04 that has the cryptic title of "Clamp Short" in the manual. Now, the unit fails to turn on. What am I supposed to do?

Hello,

Sometimes, this can be a battery problem or a UPS problem. A clamp short is a problem with the inverter in the UPS. Considering yours does not turn on at all, it is likely a problem with the UPS versus the battery. Your UPS is still under warranty so technical support should be able to provide you with a new unit and then you can send your old one back in the box from the new one.

Angela - following your suggestion, I contacted Schneider/APC via chat and they will be issuing me a new UPS while sending me an RMA for the defective unit to be returned.

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...

You have been connected to Vennila.

Vennila:  Thank you for contacting Schneider Electric's chat service supporting APC products. How may I help you?

Cesar:  I bought a Back-UPS XS 1000 (serial # 3B1304X23063) about 4 months ago, and after working fine for that time, it started beeping with a warning message. I eventually saw an error message numbered F04 that has the cryptic title of "Clamp Short" in the manual. Now, the unit fails to turn on. What am I supposed to do?

Vennila:  I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you I can certainly assist you with this issue .

Vennila:  do you mind if I ask a few questions and we do some troubleshooting steps to confirm what the issue is in order to provide the proper solution?

Cesar:  OK

Vennila:  Thank you

Vennila:  Could you tell me the equipment you normally connect to the “battery plus surge” and “surge only” outlets, please?

Cesar:  There is nothing connected to it now.

Vennila:  Okay

Vennila:  Will you be able to perform some troubleshooting on your APC unit at the moment?

Cesar:  Sure

Vennila:  In this case I recommend you to perform brain dead on the unit. By performing brain dead you will be able to reset the internal processor of the unit.

To brain dead a Back-ups is to purge the charge in the brain of the UPS, which will reset it. To do this, you can follow the below procedure:

Vennila:  1: Disconnect any attached load.
2: Unplug the UPS from the wall socket.
3: Disconnect the UPS' internal battery.
4: Push and hold the ""On"" button on the UPS for 5 seconds
5: Reconnect internal battery.
6: Plug UPS in to known good power source.
7: Turn UPS on.

Cesar:  OK - give me a bit and I'll perform the procedure - be right back

Vennila:  Sure, Please let me know whether the error message appears even after conducting the brain dead test

Cesar:  Nothing happened. In fact, nothing happened after step 4. Was the unit supposed to do something at that point? Note that it wasn't plugged in nor was the battery connected while performing step 4 according to your instructions so I'm not sure how it was supposed to react without any power.

Vennila:  Cesar, If the unit is good, then it should have reacted in the step 4 .

Vennila:  But the unit seems to be having some internal fault

Cesar:  OK - then you have confirmed that the unit is no good.

Vennila:  I will replace it for you

Vennila:  Please provide me the below shipping details

Cesar:  Excellent. How do we do that?

Vennila:  1. company name:
2. first and last name:
3. contact number:
4. e-mail address:
5. full shipping address:
6. equipments you normally contact to the back ups unit:

Cesar:  1. company name: -None-
2. first and last name: Cesar xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
3. contact number: xxx-xxx-xxxx
4. e-mail address: xxx@xxx.xxx
5. full shipping address: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
6. equipments you normally contact to the back ups unit: 2 computers into the battery outlets, modem/router into the surge-only outlets

Vennila:  Thank you for the details you will be receiving the RMA number in 1 business day and the unit will be shipped in 3 business days . is that okay with you?

Cesar:  Sure - that sounds perfect.

Cesar:  The RMA will contain instructions on how to ship the failed unit back to you?

Vennila:  Cesar, is the model number of the unit BX1000 or BX1000G?

Cesar:  Let me check

Cesar:  BX1000G

Cesar:  http://forums.apc.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/64734-8232/Back-UPS%20XS%201000%20Serial.jpg

Vennila:  yes you will get 2 consequent e-mail about the shipping of the defective unit and the other e-mail will contain the tracking # of the replacement unit

Cesar:  OK - thank you

Vennila:  No problem Cesar, Its my pleasure

Cesar:  OK - I appreciate your help. Do you need anything else from me or are we done?

Vennila:  is there anything else that I can help you with today?

Cesar:  Nothing else - thank you.

Vennila:  you are welcome Cesar

Vennila:  have a nice day smile

Cesar:  You too.

Vennila:  Thank you

Vennila:  bye:) smile

Cesar:  Bye
