Hello I have a Back-UPS Pro 650VA model no. BP650S. I recently got this backup from someone but it came with no cables or software or documentation. They said it was in good working condition. I've never used a backup before. How do I install it as a basic battery backup for WinXP? I don't need any unattended shutdown or anything like that. Do I need to use a usb cable? Will any usb cable work? If I don't have one can I use a regular serial cable to connect the PC to the UPS?
Please help thank you!

Friend,
The BP650S UPS can work fine without connecting a cable between the UPS and the Computer.
If you want to monitor and shutdown your Computer gracefully in the event of extended power failure, then you need to connect the Communication cable in order for the Power Management Software to recognize the UPS.
Therefore, the UPS will provide power to the connected equipment in the event of power. However, it can not shutdown your Computer gracefully if the cable is not attached.
For your information, a third party/standard serial cable should not be attached to the UPS Serial Port. The Compatible serial cable part number is 940-0024.
I hope that this helps.

Hi thanks for responding. I charged the APC overnight and plugged the computer into it and booted the computer. Then I pulled the APC plug from the wall outlet but the computer does not stay on. I hear 3 or 4 beeps from the APC and then nothing. I don't see any lights turned on on the front. When it is operating normally I just see the green utility LED on. Do I need to configure something else to get it working? Do I need to go to Display Properties, Screensaver, Power, UPS and add the APC there?
Edit: I just ran a self test and the computer restarted and the APC started making short constant beeps and the weak battery light came on. I guess that means the battery needs replacing? If so where can I get one and how much are they? I'm a little annoyed because the person said it was in working condition so I assumed the battery was good also.

As I have said earlier, the UPS should work fine without configuring any settings if the battery is in good condition.
If the unit makes 4 beeps every 30 seconds, then it means that the unit is working on battery.Did "On battery" LED come on after you unplug the unit from the wall? How long did it run on battery after you unplug it from the wall? Did you connect the equipment to the battery backup outlets? Are you sure that the battery in the unit is in good condition? If the battery is too old, it may not provide the expected runtime on battery even if the unit does not show the replace battery indication.
