Back-UPS ES 750 constant alarm

The unit is connected to a computer workstation as power surge protector;  the workstation is not in use and the computer is turned off although still connected to the network mainframe. Unit is emitting a constant squeal or beep when powered on (it is on all the time). Large light next to power button glows red (manual does not label this light). No green power light. No battery indicator light. Powering unit off will stop the alarm. Resetting circuit breaker button does nothing. Could this be a battery life problem even though the battery indicator light is not lit and workstation is not in use/drawing power?

Thanks for your input, William. We will definitely try swapping out the battery before we kick it to the curb.

Hi Jackie,

The issue sounds more like an internal failure of the UPS. Do you happen to have the serial number available or know when the unit was purchased?

Unit numbers are BE750BB

AB0549141271

I do not know when/where this was purchased by the company.

The serial indicates the unit is 12yrs old, so I would be comfortable saying the unit is in need of replacement.

The average life of this type of unit is 5-6yrs.

Thank you Secret Squirrel. Can these units be turned  back to you or sent somewhere for recycling? I am not in favor of sending it to the landfill. If you have that information, I would appreciate receiving it.

More likely than not, it's just a failed battery. Everything you've indicated as taking place is what these units do when the battery fails a self test. (Not all have the red light, though.)

If you want to recycle the unit, there are many options. APC offers their Trade UPS program in some countries. You'll get a discount toward the purchase of a new UPS purchased directly from APC. Many larger retailers of electronics and office products have also begun to offer free recycling programs for old, broken and unwanted electronics. Some larger thrift stores also recycle electronics at no charge.
