Back-UPS 500 cs switches on to overload

Hi, I have a 500 CS which did work fine, but now when i switch it on, it goes to the red overload solid overload light part way through the start up procedure.

ie
1. press button on front,
2. green led comes on (flashing)
3. a short while later the orange light flashes
4. almost immediately the red solid overload light comes on and the unit sits there with a constant 'beep'

I have tried taking the battery out and testing (13.5v) and putting on charger and re-installing. No change.

I read on a post that i need to change the triacs connected to the big heatsink. Is this true? (i'm good with a soldiering iron)

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Ivan

Hi,

When the tone sounds, the LED's are SOLID GREEN and SOLID RED.

Any clues as to what the issue is would be great, as i'm quite happy with a soldering iron etc.

I don't think its under warranty. It's a few years old.

thanks

Ivan

so what LEDs do you see while you hear the constant tone? solid overload and flashing on battery?

regardless, if you have disconnected and reconnect the battery and it still does it, it is some type of internal fault. if you confirm the LEDs above i can at least tell you what type of internal fault.

APC cannot give advice on opening the unit, etc and working on it but maybe someone else can so you can do it at your own risk. if the UPS is in warranty, you will void the warranty though.

let me know about the LEDs.

hi ivan,

i dont have anything listed for a constant tone with a SOLID online and SOLID overload.

are you sure the OVERLOAD is solid read or is it maybe replace battery? the order of the LEDs are as follows:

Online
On battery
Overload
Replace battery

if you are absolutely sure, then unfortunately i am not sure what the exact issue is 😞
