For years, it has been a constant education battle to assist people in determining the right UPS model for their servers, with making sure people use a true Sine-wave UPS, but now APC is advertising the BR1000MS as supporting "Sine Wave" output. If this is the case, is it a true sine wave output, and if so, then what is the difference now between the SMC series UPSs and the BRXXXXMS series UPSs?
Specifically, what is the difference between the BR1000MS and the SMC1000c?

Hi,
The BR is designed for home / office where as the SMC is designed for IT / servers. The Back-UPS is compatible with PowerChute Personal Edition and the Smart-UPS is compatible with PowerChute Business Edition. Also, the SMC is cloud enable.

This response did not answer the most important part of my question--does the BR-MS series of UPSs support true sine wave, and if so, is there any other major difference between it and the SMC series (at the hardware/protection level)?

Hi ATSS,
The BR1000MS does support pure sine wave output.
The BR1000MS offers surge protection for ethernet and coax cable.
Bill has covered most other differences between the two UPS's in his previous post.

Tom

So to summarize, here is what i understand to be true:
The BR1000MS and SMC1000C both support true sine wave output, AVR trim, and have similar power protection functionality.
Where they differ is in the features, where the SMC series is clearly designed for server use, while the BR series is not; here is a quick rundown of the differences:
The SMC supports network shutdown with a module upgrade, and the software it uses (Business Edition) has alert capabilities, and supports Server operating systems.
The BR does not support network shutdown, and the software it uses (Personal Edition) does not have alert capabilities, nor is it supported (although it may work) on server operating systems. That being said, the BR does add Coaxial and Ethernet surge protection.
Is this correct?
Thanks,
Jerry
