Hello,
I have a BE650R. A few months ago I came home a few times to find my equipment off and it making a persistent beeping sound. I figured after a year or so that battery may be dead, but didn't have time to replace it. I moved my equipment to the surge only side and left it off. Fast forward to the present, I decided to go ahead and get a replacement battery. I hooked it back up to the wall to let it charge for a few hours before moving my computer, a 20" iMac to the battery side of the UPS. I came home again to find my machine off, and the UPS making a persistent tone. I did a few tests and found that if I test the unit by unplugging it from the wall, anything plugged into the battery side immediately dies. Clearly its not a battery problem, I'm thinking the unit is defective. I used a laptop to the data port with PowerChute loaded and with nothing plugged into the battery side of things, it shows 8 minutes of available runtime with the power in the on position, and 34 minutes with it off. I would think with no load it should say the same time for both!
Just a little confused here, Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi twm1010,
Going off what you have said this sounds like its just the Replace Battery Indicator. The batteries typically last 3-5 years but it all depends on how often they are discharged and the environment they are in. What is the serial number on the UPS and do you know if the battery has ever been replaced before?
That UPS uses a RBC17. There is also the Trade-UPS program if you would prefer to trade in the old UPS for a new one at http://buy.apc.com/commerce/storefronts/tradeups/default.aspx?StorefrontCode=apcetu&countrycode=US&t....

Hi twm1010,
The Flashing orange LED with a constant tone usually means the battery is disconnected. If the LED goes out then that would mean the unit is overloaded.
The results from the test you have tried sounds more like an overload. Can you try the pull plug test again with no load and then with a small load (like a lamp) and see it the LED flashes orange, goes off, or flashes green? Also, double check the battery connections and make sure they are on tight.
What is normally plugged into the UPS on each of the sides?
This should give us a better understanding of what might be happening.

The flashing orange is happening all the time actually, and without any tone. When I come home to find it ringing, the led is red usually. Regardless of whether or not something is plugged into the battery backup side of the unit. Normally, the only thing plugged into that side is just my 20" imac, nothing else.
