BE500U
- Out of Warranty. 5+ years old
- No equipment plugged in
- Battery measures 12.38 Volts DC
When you power on, Green Power On light blinks and it emits a constant tone. It does this even if the battery is removed.
Any ideas? This unit "toast"?

Robert,
Thank you for using the APC Forum. Can you still turn the UPS on, does it still provide power to the load or did it dropped the load? For troubleshooting you can follow the steps listed below:
* Ensure that the circuit breaker is not popped out.
* Turn the UPS On if you cannot turn it on you can leave it off, unplug it from the wall outlet and then press and hold the power button as soon as you hear the second beep or the long beep let it go. This should force the UPS to turn itself on using the battery. If the UPS fails to turn on using the normal way and or using the steps I have provided the unit failed and needs to be replaced.
* If the UPS still turns on, does it still provide power to the load?
* You have mentioned that you have a flashing Green LED on the unit, please check if the battery side outlet is working, if it is not try to reseat the battery connector. Attach a load on the surge only outlet and see if it would turn on, if it doesn't turn on plug it straight to the wall outlet if it does turn on on the wall outlet the UPS is not working properly.
* If the load does not turn on while it is on the battery backed up side, the unit would need to be replaced

Turn the UPS On if you cannot turn it on you can leave it off, unplug it from the wall outlet and then press and hold the power button as soon as you hear the second beep or the long beep let it go. This should force the UPS to turn itself on using the battery. If the UPS fails to turn on using the normal way and or using the steps I have provided the unit failed and needs to be replaced.
I could never get the unit to switch to the battery. There was never a second beep. With the unit unplugged, there was never power to the unit.
If the UPS still turns on, does it still provide power to the load?
Load gets power when unit turns on.
You have mentioned that you have a flashing Green LED on the unit, please check if the battery side outlet is working, if it is not try to reseat the battery connector.
Battery Side Works when plugged in
Attach a load on the surge only outlet and see if it would turn on, if it doesn't turn on plug it straight to the wall outlet if it does turn on on the wall outlet the UPS is not working properly.
Surge Side of The battery works OK when power is on.
After doing the tests:
- Unit gets power when plugged in - both surge side and battery side; howeve4r, there is a loud constant beep and green Power light blinks.
- Unit Never gets power when unit is off or unplugged. Unit never switches to battery mode.
Does this mean the unit has failed?
Is it possible to purchase a unit without a battery? The is the second BE500U that has failed like this. I now have two good batteries yet no UPS to put them in.
thanks for your help
Robert

With the load attached to the battery side of the UPS, what happens if you unplug the UPS? Does it provide power to the load? Was the runtime affected? Also have you tried swapping the battery with a known good one? If the issue still persists and you have managed to swap batteries, chances are the unit had encountered a fault.
