BACK-UPS ES700 looses connection to battery

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/5/2015

My ES700 have recently started to loose connection to the battery for short periods. During period - 5-10 seconds, a continuous beep is heard. This happens at random intervals, but I was able to follow the powershute program on a PC hooked up while this was happening. What I saw, was that the battery status (charge) disappeared, and a warning message was displayed saying connection to battery lost. When beeping stops, everything seems to be back to normal again, and no fault is logged in powershute. No devices are brought down during the error, but beeping is quite annoying during the night.

I thought this was because a faulty battery, so I ordered a new one. But - with the new battery, same thing is happening! UPS is 3 years old and only driving an external hard disk and routers. Any clues?

Thanks for the clarification. Assuming the battery is securely connected as you mentioned, I'd make an educated guess that there could be a problem with the UPS. If it were me, I'd try to "reset" the UPS but I am not sure if it will fix anything. To do that, you can remove everything from the UPS, including the USB cable, turn it off, unplug it from the wall, remove the battery, and hold down the off button for 10-20 seconds to discharge it completely. Then, reconnect the battery and turn the UPS back on and reconnect the USB cable and observe from there once everything is back together and plugged in.

Beyond that, there seems to be an issue with the UPS "seeing" the battery and trying a new battery was one option but if it still does it, I'd blame the UPS.

Can you describe the beep? When you first mentioned battery, I can't tell if you're saying the UPS reports the battery is physically disconnected or if PowerChute is saying that it lost communication to the battery back up as a whole (which in that case, I wouldn't expect it to beep). They would mean different things so that is why I wanted to clarify.

You don't happen to have a screenshot of PowerChute during this, do you? And if you do physically disconnect the battery, does it make the same beep sound you're hearing? Could you clarify the sound - it is a constant tone - would you call it the same beep as the 4 beeps you hear every 30 seconds, or more of a "chirp?"

Once I know more, I can make some suggestions. I was thinking if it is lost communication between powerchute and the battery back up as a whole, you could try a different USB port and verify the cable is connected properly but I am leaning towards something else based on the beeping.

Seems like I cannot upload a video here, even though the menu option exists. If you need it, I can email it, 1.6Mb
