I need to replace my UPS and have been looking at the APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 550 BR550GI
I don't need to keep the server up for very long but as we have frequent power outages I am trying to find out if the Pro 550, which "Includes: CD with software , USB cable", does instruct the server to shut down when there is a loss of power?
If it doesn't is there a similar sized UPS that does?

thank you for your help.
It is for domestic use and I don't need to keep the server up and running but we have so many power outages that it crashes the server without the UPS to hold it up.
I discovered that the UPS had failed when yet again the power went of momentarily and the server crashed. (the worst crash took me days to recover one of the discs)
The trouble is that the power can blip, for a few minutes, or it can disappear for hours; hence my need for telling the server to shut down in a controlled fashion and save my discs.
Thanks again for the help

Hi,
Yes, Back-UPS products that indicate they support a USB connection with software can be configured to work with some native OS support or APC's PowerChute Personal Edition.
This product is here where you can find some more of the extra details if you didn't already: http://www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/products/APC-Power-Saving-Back-UPS-Pro-550/P-BR550GI?isCurrentSite=tru...
Also, you can check the runtime graphs there to see if this UPS has enough wattage and capability to support your server. Typically, an enterprise class server would be best supported by something in the Smart-UPS product family due to the type of technology used inside the UPS and requirements of a server's power supply. But, if it is a smaller server, using a Back-UPS may be OK for your requirements. (Some more info here for browsing: http://www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/categories/power/uninterruptible-power-supply-ups-/network-and-server/... )
If you did check into a Smart-UPS, they support the same thing just through different means (different type of software/cables/accessories).
