Another "beeping" thread....

Hello all,

I had no idea there a forum for these things. Hopefully I can get some help with this. I have an APC "BE350U" (UPS ES 350)? If that's not enough to indicate what model I have please let me know whatever I need to provide. I work at a small business and this is the battery backups we have for each machine. The power went out a week or so ago and my machine turned off. I had forgotten that maybe a year ago, I had this issue and had just plugged everything into the "surge protection only" side of the unit. So I went ahead and plug things back into the battery backup side a few days ago and it worked just fine until this morning. Nothing has happened with the power but it just started making the "squeeling" noise again so I had to plug everything back into the "surge protection only" side. Does this mean the battery in the unit is deffective? or possibly the unit incorrectly runs directly off the battery until it is depleted of power instead of using the battery power for backup only? I hate to tell my boss I need a new one if I'm just doing something wrong. Any advice?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

Did you happen to notice a light flashing on the unit while this was happening?

A beeping can mean several different things - a constant tone may mean that the battery outlets are overloaded. A beeping every four seconds means that it is on battery and it can also do a low battery warning.

Please see the attached sheet here and reference the status indicators page and hopefully we can match it up to what you encountered.

If it doesnt match, it could be a problem with the UPS - such as it accepted a surge and sacrificed itself. But I can't tell at this point.

is it definitely a beep (versus a chirp)? a beep would be described as the tone you hear when the UPS is on battery (the four beeps every thirty seconds).

how long does the beeping last for?

Thanks for your response!

I didn't notice any lights on it when it happened. It sits under my desk at an angle that only allows me to see the green power light on top and not the red light on the front of the unit. I had my computer, monitor and printer plugged into the backup and a flourescent light pluged into the wall outlet next to the backup. I just plugged my monitor into it and nothing else to see if anything happens...so far it seems to be working fine.

As far as the pdf file is concerned. When I click on the pdf file it locks up Internet Explorer and forces a close. It's not a problem for me to open pdf files or create them. I think maybe the file has issues.

Hmm,

I tried it on firefox and IE and it worked fine, let me try reattaching it in a .jpg format of a screenshot of the section I wanted you to read.

See if you can grab that attachment.

Got it that time. Thanks!

Right now I have only my computer and monitor plugged into the "battery" side. I've had it that way for the past few hours and haven't noticed anything wierd. I think maybe with the printer plugged into that side as well it was creating issues.

a chirp is more of a quiet, faster tone, where as a beep is what you hear when the UPS goes to battery and beeps four times every thirty seconds. it is louder than a chirp as well.

hope that helps..

the chirping could be related to the battery or a faulty alarm. with a bad battery, i would suspect you'd see some type of LED indication though.

IPAW,
Can you define a "chirp" vs. a "beep?"
I've got 3 units (old, BP1100) that like to wake me up with a string of "chirps" (I think) with no other visual indication of possible fault. I can not state how many "chirps" happen, but, they seem to come back around every 30/60 minutes or so.

ATM, I have accepted this as potential battery failure, but can not confirm................. πŸ™‚
I have taken my "chirping" units offline.

To my bad, these units to operate on AC wall plugs that DO NOT have a wired GROUND.
Like, I do have an active "Check Wiring" LED on the back of the units. My bad.
But, ATM, I just do not have the ~$3K to rewire my home.............. 😞

I've never heard "chips" before. And, I've used APC since 1996; own 7 units. Nice protection, BTW!
Thanks,
Duncan
