My APC unit is great. It has protected my computer equipment and peripherals from brown outs, blackouts and many other things , including surges on the mains and all. I have had it for about 7 years now and the latest 'protection story' is well worth the trouble. I have moved across the country, from Montreal to Vancouver, and my APC has protected me well. Just recently, because I live in an older building, circa; 1975, the wiring at the electrical sockets went bad and 220 vac was applied to all my equipment on this particular circuit. My microwave fried, my clock radio became extinct, but my computer workstation, protected by my APC Back up unit, was saved ! I contacted my insurance agent, because things like this are protected under my policy, but it was not worth making a claim for just a microwave and clock radio. He was surprised to learn that none of my computer equipment was damaged and asked me what helped ! Well, you know the rest , THANKS APC!!

220V/240 on 110/120V outlets is caused by a broken neutral. The two phases uses the neutral wire to "make" 120V and the neutral is attached to the "center tap" of the power transformer, which make it possivel for having two phases of 120V each, when this referance point is lost, in this case the neutral wire, the phase that is "in touch" with the neutral and is least loaded, can get up to 220V.
