I cannot find any info on the APC website regarding the Biopods. I see that Omnipass, which is the software that comes with them, supports Vista. Is the Biopod hardware supported and how do I get the software upgraded?

Although Softex may have a solution for Vista application, APC Password Managers do not yet support this OS. APC and Softex are working on a APC specific solution. Once APC has finished testing and is ready to support this solution, we will start building it into the new production of our units. It will be a free upgrade for anyone that has purchased the product since Jan 1, 2007.

I searched for a day and became discusted with a product that I had used for years, A promise from Omnipass that the new version omnipass7 would work with Windows Vista and 7 and it does but not with any biopod, only typing in a master pass word, omnipass said you have to have a swipe sensor but that did not solve the problem either. What Omnipass does not tell everyone is that they don't have the ability to create a WBF driver,
Windows Biometric Foundation Driver, now I'll advertise a much better product and software without fear of repercussion Yet a VERY VERY Perfect Product and software Takes you away from APC and Omnipass so write this down before APC deleates this post, buy a (Secugen Hamster Plus Biopod) sensor and download the( free software Protector Suit 2009) if you like go pro for $19.95. Much less expensive than Omnipass, Sorry APC but if you sell a product and have loyal customers for YEARS you should stand behind them. They pay your bills. This post has been copied and pasted on 15 different public fourms. I logged onto this post with a fingerprint. Have a Great day!
PS; a little note to everyone, they quit supporting products so they can sell more Products. DUH

How about just a Vista driver for the Biopod?
If APC isn't going to offer the Vista version of the Omnipass software to older customers, at least let us use the hardware and buy new software. Basically by getting a PC with Vista, I have made this thing worthless. 😞
I used to hold APC in very high regard. Their credibility with me has been severely damaged as a result of this. It's amazing to think that a company like APC would let a new version of Windows hit the market and not be prepared.
Like the poster above, this may be the last APC product I ever purchase.

The current Vista Omnipass is available through the company Softex. Again, it is not yet supported with the APC Biometric line of Password Managers.
http://www.softexinc.com/main.asp
There is no current workaround or support for Mac or Linux.

Can't help but follow up by noting my frustration at 'moderator' Notorious K's playful jousting (actually, taunting) with you guys about this---some people seem to take joy in going online solely to anger and frustrate, and that's not what the 'net is about.
I wonder if the guy has contacts with APC, or does he just get his kicks in promoting the universal devil's advocacy program?
My bet is that Microsoft saw the potential of this software/driver set, and paid for the rights to the very first release of it, so SoftEx just had to wait until they got the 'okay' from Microsoft to release their Vista version until after MS had made their millions on this product. Too bad for us all.
Microsoft should pay us all back by pushing for an early release of SP2 for Vista, with developers and, basically, yard-sale-printer owners like myself, in mind. Say late May, at the latest.
In a world where you can find free online 'hacks' that will make PS2 EyeToys work with Windows, it's sad how many people are out there having fun making cracks at people trying to cope.
Online rumote had it that the original Vista Beta had a better HCL (hardware compatibility list) than the one we got. I do know I downloaded and installed the free Microsoft Windows 64-bit Beta more than three years ago and enjoyed it with all my printers, so hmmm....
One more note: research MS Agent, the Microsoft Agent program that Microsoft listed on their download site for extra XP stuff. This is one good example of Microsoft using an opportunity to gain code, that time Lernout & Hauspie's speech engine. L&H cheated on their taxes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lernout_&_Hauspie)
and went bankrupt in 2001. Microsoft has listed their speech engine under their TTS (text-to-speech) pull-down menu at the following link for a long time now. Useful and edutainment-tional (I live in Kentucky).

Very interesting topic. As well as I liked my OMNIPASS I was as well as dismayed by the lack of support. I purchased a new high-end model iMac tonight as a result to both many PC oriented companies and MS Vista compatibility. Came here looking to see if maybe there were some drivers for OSX but I guess this answers my question.

Why is APC blaming this problem on Softex?? Softex has actually done something about the problem and has introduced v5.0 of Omnipass. I don't care if APC is "still evaluating" it. It's good enough for me, and the trial version works great. APC needs to RELEASE THE DRIVERS FOR VISTA! Come on! It's been over a year since Vista came out. What the is APC waiting for?
As a previous poster mentioned, I also had high regard for APC before this purchase. This is horrible. I bought a product that APC hd NO INTENTION of supporting. If you think "sometime in 2008" is good enough for Vista support, you are wrong. I will never buy a piece of APC crap again.

*******Please NOTE that the FOLLOWING does not represent the thoughts or expressions of APC, and at this time, as a Moderator, this is a personal post. Again in no way reflecting the thoughts or opinions of APC, just a personal shoot.******
I apologize for everyone's frustration here, but let me pose three questions....
*1) If Softex is the manufacturer or Omnipass and the Omnipass sotware contains the embedded driver, how do you propose that APC LEGALLY obtain a driver for frree, from a software that's still being sold at the retail level?*
*2) If you received the driver, what difference does it make? You can't use the biopod without Omnipass 5.0, which you'd still have to pay for. And what if you run into problems with it? You can't contact Softex, they'll direct you to APC. You can't contact APC because it's officially unsupported.*
*3) If the common trend continues, what happens at the end of 2008 when Vista becomes the Windows ME of Microsoft and is forgotten about? Driver signing and software compatibility is going to be much harder to obtain in 9 months.*

Vista was released 1/30/07. After one and a half years, the best APC can come up with is a beta version of the Vista software for the biopod. APC has missed the broader implications of their failure to support a $50 product. It raises serious questions about APC's ability (or want) to support any of their products. I own four APC UPS units. I will not buy another one.

Let me pose these comments/rebuttals:
* Most other companies purchase a limited edition (LE) of software to bundle with their product. SoftEx could do this with the current v5 or v6 product line to provide a free LE version while still allowing for a retail version with more features. Most likely APC would have to pay a fee and perhaps royalties for such an LE version of the product, but that would be expected. Additionally, SoftEx could hard-code the free LE version to only work with BioPod devices so as to also protect APC's investment in the special LE version.
* It seems to me that APC is simply not interested in spending any major money on the BioPod line. Otherwise, they would have commissioned SoftEx already to create an LE version as suggested above. Additionally, trying to find any info or downloads on BioPod devices on APC's web site is just about impossible. There isn't even a dedicated forum for BioPod devices. What does that tell you?
APC really dropped the ball here and obviously doesn't care about BioPod users. I wouldn't be surprised if they are simply biding their time, hoping that some other company would come along and purchase the BioPod line from APC.
I'm pleased with APC's racks and UPSes and environmental monitoring devices (Grade: A), but this fiasco with BioPod devices is very disappointing (Grade: F). APC needs to work to fix this issue asap and hopefully rebuild customers' trust in the process.

So all of your comments starting with "Softex could..." would essentially be negated if APC already asked and Softex says no? How far can you actually push a software manufacturer to provide software, when each time you ask they say no?
As for not being able to find the software on the APC website, it's not APC software so it's not going to be hosted on a public FTP downloads page. It is however hosted at ftp.apc.com. That's like going to a Microsoft Website and finding a link to Norton AntiVirus simply because your HP machine came with it. It's not going to be there because it's not a Microsoft product.

It is reasonable for APC or the company holding the copyright on the firmware/software were to release the source code to the Open Source Community under the Gnu Public License where we software developers could produce (for free) drivers for Windows Vista (not that we would), Mac OS X, and Linux/FreeBSD/*nix.
I propose that APC move in this direction as a way to solve their software development issues regarding alternate drivers and software, then focus on selling more of their Biometric USB devices to those of us who would love to implement their use in hundreds of ways utilizing operating systems other than Microsoft's(tm) Windows(tm) variants.
If contacted, I am ready and willing to start a project on Source Forge for just this purpose.
Response, APC?
In all sincerity,

Hello All,
APC Mobile has been working with Omnipass verison 5 and is currently testing the software in use with the Biopod. Unfortunately, before it can be fully supported, APC needs to make sure that any problems that may arise in use with the pod be addressed before it is publically released.
Please keep in mind that APC is NOT responsible for the software, and are OEM'd the software in use with the Biopod. Therefore APC does not manufacture the drivers that will support the Biopod in Windows Vista.
So long as Softex is selling the software for profit, a freeware version will not be available. Also, freeware would have to be distributed through Softex, as well as anything for OpenSource. Omnipass 5 will be released hopefully in late Q1 2008

Hello,
You do not have to call into TS to get the link for download, you can submit an email.
The email should consist of the model and serial number of the biometric device you are using, and your operating system (and specify whether it is 32 or 64 bit). A link will then be provided for you on the return communication.
As for your other question, I will submit that to Andrew and ask him to provide me with information to pass on to everyone here, or post an update.
Thanks.

Hi Deone,
Unfortunately Andrew is attending a tradeshow this week in Las Vegas therefore has limited access to internet and email. I did send him an email this morning asking for some clarification on the direction of the Beta.
I can tell you from experience of working with Omnipass 5.0 Beta since we were provided it, that it has not resulted in any program crashes on our Vista test box that we have in our lab.

What is the recent version for APC Omnipass 5 is it the same one that they gave when they first announce that apc is making a beta versions of Omnipass V5.0 with support for Microsoft Vista available to APC biometrics customer. Did they release any new update to APC Omnipass 5 since the beta annoucement?
APC has now made BETA versions of Omnipass V5.0 with support for Microsoft Vista, available to customers.

No, it's the same version. I believe what I was told when before I left was that V5 was not a full and final release, but unknown to APC, the software was in fact a full and final release.

Researcher hacks Microsoft Fingerprint Reader
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2006/030706-hacker-microsoft-fingerprint.html?brl
Microsoft fingerprint reader issue: Because the fingerprint image is transferred unencrypted from the Fingerprint Reader to the PC, it could be stolen using a variety of hardware and software technologies, called "sniffers," that monitor such traffic, said Kiviharju, a researcher with the Finnish Defense Forces. "The fingerprint that can be sniffed is pretty good quality," he said
After reading the article above i was wondering if APC biopod have the same flaw that Microsoft finger print reader. Does the fingerprint image transferred encrypted from the fingerprint readear to the pc?

White I do not know precisely how the fingerprint scan is managed in the software, it would be prudent to mention that the APC Biopod and other APC Biometric devices are not being marketed as "security" devices, but rather as "password managers" for convenience.
Perhaps we can get more detail on whether our product works differently from the product you referenced in that article.

I agree that $50 is out of line, but you failed to mention in your post that merely buying the "Hamster" is not enough - that's just the hardware device plus drivers. You must also purchase a software (suite) that's compatible with the Hamster hardware...

All I have to say is, I agree with everyone else... Last APC product I buy (and since I handle IT procurement at a major dot com, last for them as well).
APC was an awesome company up until about a year or two ago. Only headed down hill from there.
Anyways, this is ridiculous that APC would sell a product and REFUSE to support it or do ANYTHING about issues with fairly NEW products. Is it any supprise that Microsoft would release a new operating system at some point.... Especially when the current OS was pretty old when the BioPod product came out. That is horrible to create and sell a product expecting it to only work a short time (till Vista came out, which was known publicly, was being released when the BioPod came out) and then just saying "Oh well, it will work for a little while...duh..dee..dou...dou..."_
I really can not believe the answers and excuses the modirator has listed 😞 . I know it's probably not her/his fault and told to respond that way so nothing personal, but those were ridiculous and BS responses/EXCUSES.
APC GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!! I LOVED APC, untill about a year or so ago when they seemed to completely fall apart. Was very loyal to APC and as a sys dev. for a major dot com, have spent enormous amounts of (company) money on APC racks, power backups, ect. It's that time again to replace many of our older racks and power units, and apparenly I need to shop elsewhere this time... I really liked the old APC and would love to continue with them, but if things keep going how they have been lately, I'll be glad I switched...
Sorry,
Former Customer

I had the same problem, having bought my APC fingerprint reader on clearance at Wal-mart, I forgot (once again) to check for that Vista compatibility--and I have SP1 for Vista, so don't worry about that...

Was my answer thanks to user paladin44's entry there: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=116704
I think that's what did it, actually a newer version of OmniPass made available to PowerPro notebook users.
Thanks again to paladin44 for that vital help.

Actually, that post was STRICTLY posted as it states as an APC End-User, but, I am actually an APC Employee. That post with the "taunting" as you think it is, is strictly a PERSONAL opinion. Therefore it does not reflect the opinions of APC.
Also, we could post all day long here that there are torrents available for download for Omnipass 5.0 for those who are in "the know" would know how to obtain. However, since the software's still available for retail purchase, I won't go into the legal liabilities that I would have to undertake by posting information such as how to find it, etc.
It's still not available, and now I've been informed that due to the quality of the software that APC is currently testing, they are not releasing it as they are not content with the problems it is creating. APC isn't going to officially release and support a software package that will create problem after problem, knowing that it will create problem after problem.
That's like buying a car without an engine, knowing there's no engine in there when you're selling it, then once it's bought you just say "well, you knew about it, deal with it" We're trying to put the engine in the car prior to putting it on the lot.
