AC shutdown NAS and PC

I had APC 1500 ups for years. Recently someone told me I could have the UPS hooked to my Synology NAS for a safe shutdown and also shut down the pc at the same time. However, I can't see how as the data usb is not connected to the pc. He stated it's done via the network. Can anyone assist me. TIA

Given you haven’t provided a specific model APC UPS. My reply will be very generic to cover as many possible solutions.

If the unit has a NMC in place you can send a graceful shutdown via PCNS software. 

If you have a raspberry pi connected to the target computer. You may also consider using NUT to initiate a graceful shutdown.
