is it reguired to use the APC software in order for the UPS to work?

I have not installed the APC powerchate software on my mac lion and wanted to know if it's even reguired to install in order for the UPS to work the correct way?

nope, its not. APC provides software for monitoring of the UPS and graceful shutdown of the attached system. it is not required for the UPS to do its essential function of battery back up though but your system will not gracefully shutdown. another option is to use native OS support which generally does not provide as much info as the APC software but provides some monitoring and graceful shutdown.
