dac.exe

After recently checking the status of my APC backup, I started getting requests from Zone Alarm to allow dac.exe to access the web. Should I allow this? Is dac.exe a part of the APC system?
Thanks.

I too got a warning about dac.exe trying to connect to the Internet and I found this when searching for information about dac.exe:

xrysostom @ [http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=69586 wrote:}I use XP and Zone Alarm Pro and I got this, too. When I got the ZA popup, there was also a link for the properties of the program. On my box, dac.exe is part of the APC PowerChute software, specifically PowerChute Personal Edition 2.0 for Win2000/XP. Since I trust APC, I decided to trust this particular process. Online info is very sketchy but I'm wondering if it doesn't pertain to the reporting aspect of the data collection function. Thus, it doesn't show up continually among the running processes. If you're running PowerChute, you might try unchecking that box and see if it stops popping up.
The dac.exe program on my system is found in C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition and like the author of the message quoted above, I have the "Enable Data Collection" option ticked which allows Powerchute Personal Edition to "+periodically send information to APC about how the product is used and also the quality of input power...+"
The IP address the dac.exe application tries to connect to is 88.221.178.215 (port 53) which DNS resolves as a nicely named server e671.b.akamaiedge (See http://www.akamai.com/html/about/index.html for more info if you are interested)

Hope this helps!

Dac.exe does get installed with PowerChute Personal Edition. When you first install PowerChute, you are asked if you would like to send information about how the UPS and software is used. It sends things like how often each feature is used etc. This process does not send any personal information to APC.

Was zone alarm installed prior to the instalation of PowerChute? What kind of alert is being sent (can you send the exact text)? What version of zone alarm are you using? Are there any settings you have changed in Zone Alarm to cause it to work any differently than it would by default? What version of PowerChute are you using? What operating system? What type of network connection do you have (cable....etc)?

We've tried installing Zone Alarm here and have not been able to reproduce. This process can be allowed to access the internet with no safety issues. The process can also be turned off. If possible, I'd like to get the above info for our developers however so that we can work better with Zone Alarm before you turn off that option if that is your choice.
