changing software on AP9606 Web/SNMP card

I had a number of AP9606 Web/SNMP Management cards installed in some MasterSwitch intelligent PDU's. We've retired the PDU's but would like to use the cards on some of our SmartUPS units. Does anyone know the procedure for swapping the firmware to that which can talk to a SmartUPS unit and where I might find the files (and which files are the appropriate files to use)?

Thanks.
Mike

Jon,

I forgot to mention that the 326b aos doesn't exist on the ftp server in the 326 folder. aos 325 is in that folder. Where might I find 326b?

Jon,

The UPS has a broken front panel so it is pretty much a bench unit at this point. The Shirt+Y doesn't get the SM response. The Shift+A does, however make the unit beep and turn the LED's on...

Hello Mike and welcome to APC Forum.

You can remove the AP9606 from your MasterSwitch and use it on your SmartUPS units. Before plugging the AP9606 to your SmartUPS you will need to braindead the UPS first please consult this link -- [How do I properly install my Smartslot accessory card into my UPS?|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=9322&p_created=1213883650&p...]. Once you are done with this procedure you can then turn the UPS back on, if it does have an IP address already you can use the FTP method to upload the necessary files. There are two files that you normally upload on the AP9606 and they are the APC OS (AOS) and Application, the application would depend on what product the card is going to be used for SmartUPS it is SUMX.

You can consult this knowledgebase to have a basic understanding regarding the firmware upgrade -- [How do I upgrade the firmware of the NMC/Web SNMP Card?|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=768&p_created=1010390400&p_...].

I suggest that you contact the APC Customer Care Center in order for us to properly assist you.

You can download the files from this link:
- [APC OS|ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/aos/v326b/]
- [APC UPS and Application|ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/sumx/v326]. You only need to download the sumx326.bin

OK, thanks. I located the files, pulled them down to the card and now have Web/SNMP Card AOS v3.2.5 and Smart-UPS & Matrix APP v3.2.6 loaded but when I log into the card to bring up the control console menu, right above the menu it just says "Searching for a Smart-UPS or a Matrix-UPS" and when you go into the Device Manager menu, it is blank. It's like the card can't find the UPS. I've rebooted the card, shut everything totally down and powered back up with the same result.

Any ideas?

Mike,

Can you load the 3.2.6b AOS on your AP9606? What method did you use to load the files? If it is FTP, did you use the BIN function first before uploading the files? Are you using an FTP client software or the regular FTP on a DOS window?

Also please login to the card using TelNet and see if you can Reset the Card.

Jon,

The network functions on these cards work so I loaded across the network. I used the tftpclient menu choice rather than ftp as I have a tftp server running on my desktop. The files seem to load and the UPS displays the correct files and versions as the running versions. I've tried two different cards with the same result (the first card I tried via ftp server on the card and connecting via ftp from my desktop and that method timed-out, leaving the old code on the card. I didn't try ftp with the BIN option but will try pushing both AOS and SUMX via that method now.

Thanks.

Mike,

On my first post you can click on the link that says APC OS. But to prevent any confusion please download the AOS using this link [ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/aos/v326b/] you will see the aos326b.bin file on that directory. Please download and upload it on your Web/SNMP card.

Jon,

Something just occurred to me. These cards have been lying around for a while. They had aos254 and msv210 on them. Can I jump all the way to 325/326 or do I have to load some intermediate version(s) along the way?

Mike,

To tell you honestly this is the first time that I will be doing this, please bear with me. I asked my colleague about this and they said that from an AOS of 2.5.4 you can jump to 3.2.6b. Regarding the MVS file that is the application loaded into the card for it to understand the master switch. On your end we need to load the SUMX3.2.6 on it.

Have you tried rebooting the card from the TelNet menu? Can you post a screenshot of the files that are on your web/snmp card? Please see the screenshots attached to it.

How to reset the card to defaults:
- Login to the card using Telnet.
- Press 3 for System
- Press 5 for Tools and then
- Press either 2 or 3 to reset to defaults. Choosing 3 will reset the card but will leave the current IP settings on it, I suggest you do this first.

How to check the files on the card:
- Login to the card using FTP
- Type dir on the prompt and it will show you the files loaded on the card

Jon,

Not a problem. I appreciate the help.

here's the ftp dir output:

User (10.64.8.36:(none)): apc
331 User name okay, need password.
Password:
230 User logged in, proceed.
ftp> dir
200 Command okay.

226 Closing data connection.
ftp: 197 bytes received in 0.00Seconds 197000.00Kbytes/sec.

As you can see, I did load the sumx326.bin. The reference to msv was just so you knew what had been previously loaded.

Here's what the display on the ups shows:

I also just discovered that I can't telnet into the UPS. I've been working from the serial port but using tftp to bring files down so I don't know when it stopped working... tftp is still working as I down-revved to 321 to see if an earlier version would behave differently (it didn't).

Mike,

Based from what you have posted I can tell that you got the right files and the AOS and SUMX were loaded properly because of the P+ N+ and A+ status. What is the exact model of the UPS where you're using this card? Have you braindead the UPS before installing the card and have you tried using a different UPS or card?

Jon,

I've tried multiple cards. I have not tried a different UPS but was about to when your last reply hit. I did brain-dead the UPS, although in the 12 years I've been here we've always hot-swapped network cards without any issue. Any chance I could get a copy of aos253 and sumx202? That's the combination that is running OK in my other AP9606 cards. I'm not looking for latest and greatest code (although it would be nice), I just want something that works. I tried to ftp them from another AP9606 card but the file permissions don't allow me to pull them off the card to the server (they're mode 333, no read permission).

Mike,

Here is the oldest SUMX that I was able to get:
[ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/sumx/v310/]

Here is the oldest AOS that I was able to get:
[ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/aos/v253]

I do not know if you have tried the reset to default, if you haven't please do so. This sometimes help solve the problem.

Jon,

Well, it's the UPS. We put the card into to other models and it sees the UPS just fine. I'm going to go back to the current version, make sure I can telnet and call it a day.

Thanks for all your help today. I probably would have got there eventually but your suggestions sped things along.

Mike,

It is good to hear that you got it working on another UPS, but knowing that the first UPS is not communicating with the this device might give you future problems in the event that you need to add a card on that UPS.

You can try the following to see if the UPS can communicate with a computer.
- Used a terminal software like HyperTerminal
- Configured the communication settings (2400, 8, None, 1, XOn/XOff)
- Once you are logged in press Shift+Y and it should return "SM"
- Press Shift+A and it should command your UPS to beep and the LEDs to blink

Let me know what will happen.

If the UPS responded with the Shift+A command that means that your computer was able to send the command to the unit. Unfortunately for the Shift+Y there are many reasons why it would not respond to that command. It is either it fails to respond back or an application/service or hardware is blocking it.

If it does have a broken front panel and shows this serial port problem I suggest you trade it up by calling the APC Customer Care Center, you might get a great deal.

This came up when I was trying to troubleshoot firmware update and I wanted to let others having problems updating their Web/SNMP know what I found. I found out updating the aos***.bin works using FTP according to the [Official Guide|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/768] but updating the sumx***.bin wouldn't. It kept failing to properly upload no matter which version mix and match I did. It did however work using TFTP. After you update the aos according to their guide I just telnet to it then went to 3 for system, then 4 for file transfer, then 3 for TFTP and it asks for the server and file name. I just used tftpd32.exe which is an easy standalone program you can Google.
