can firmware updates go from version ID20UPS 09.8 to 18 ? or do I need to do a step update

Please read and understand all the requirements outlined in the APC Firmware FAQ.

There are only a few exceptions to performing a stepped UPS Firmware Upgrade.

The vast majority of units can be updated to the latest firmware without a stepped upgrade.

Insure you meet all the requirements and fully understand all the caveats outlined in the FAQ.

Failure to do so will result in a very heavy and expensive brick! 🤦‍♂️

what causes firmware updates to take so long ?

The time to update a device highly depends upon what previous version you were on. How big the next update is and obviously how you're connected to the system. If your system also includes external battery packs this also adds to the time to update the entire system.

Do NOT try to update the system using any other method besides a direct Serial connection via RJ50 -> RS232.
