we shutdown the as/400 and other peripheral equipment. turned off main power. unplugged UPS transformer from power supply. turned off ALL circuit breakers on UPS. using the serial port and the 940-0031a cable (DB9->DB9) connected the APC unit to the AS/400. we reversed the sequence to power up all equipment. once as/400 was up and online we unplugged the UPS and expected a message to appear stating that comm with the UPS was interrupted (or something to that effect). NOTHING HAPPENED AT ALL... This is the 5th attempt to accomplish this - using multiple different cords, ports, etc...
Whole plan was to connect the APC unit to the AS/400 to allow APC to send simple signal to AS/400 to initiate graceful "native shutdown".
This was someone else's project and he was let go before it was resolved and I need help!

Thanks a lot for all of the information. I verified the cable was the correct cable and utilized your procedures and diagrams to get the units hooked up. We then simulated a power loss situation and the as/400 registered a loss of utility power message and upon restoring power it registered a utility power restored message. The remaining configuration is for the IT staff on the as/400. Thank you very much for your assistance, most appreciated.

my first question - are you sure the correct AS400 cable was purchased for your particular AS400 model?
The two available part numbers are:
• 940-0006 – AS/400. There are two cables in this box. One cable has a DB15 for attaching to very old (and much larger) AS/400 servers. The other cable has a DB9 for attaching the AS/400. Both obviously have a DB9 on the other end that attaches to the UPS.
• AP98274 – i5, Power 5/6/7. This is for these servers going back only about 5 years, starting with the i5 Model 520. Since then there has been Power 6 and just this summer Power 7 lines of servers. They all use this newer cable.
