Hi,
I have an SMT3000, Smart UPS 3000, s/n IS1228002140, with firmware reported as ID17UPS 05.0 when looking at the "firmware" tab of the web interface and UPS 05.0 / COM 02.1 / UBL 05.0 / CBL 5.21 (ID17) when looking at the "about" tab of the web interface.
I've not been able to determine on my own whether or not this is the latest firmware and, if not, where can I get the latest firmware to update the machine?
Thanks for the information!

I, too, have an AP9630 and if there is a way to update the firmware via the NMC that would be great to know as well as it would save me some money on a cable.

as far as i know, the latest version information and downloads is in knowledge base FA164737 @ http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/
you can try the wizard in the knowledge base and it should update your UPS. if I am reading correctly, you fall into the "SMT Tower units with firmware < "UPS 08.0"" and it appears there is an update. worst case, if you run the wizard (and I am wrong), it just won't update anything.

I have a similar question, but I have an SMT1500I with the following in the About string from the AP9630...
UPS 05.0 / COM 02.1 / UBL 05.0 / CBL 5.21 (ID17)
Sadly I have 2 issues, the update tool notices the UPS but says it needs to be via serial, I don't have a serial cable for it.
I do have an NMC card in it, can I use one of the FW images within the windows pack (.enc files) and use one of those to perform the update? Or can I get the right file anywhere to do it via the NMC?

Thank you sir for the information. The wizard says that my UPS cannot be updated via USB and I do not have access to a serial cable with an RJ-45 on the one end. Do you know where I can pick up said cable and (I am wondering to myself why APC chose to use an RJ-45 for a serial connection? Maybe they need to sell some cables?).
Again, thanks much and any suggestions on where I could obtain the RJ-45 serial cable would be helpful.

the cable you would need is 940-0625 or the 15 ft version is 940-1525. I don't know if we sell it not but you may be able to order it.
you can update via the NMC but you'll need to download the firmware update wizard to extract the firmware image from the wizard.
the instructions are actually located in the help file of the NMC. Go to the web UI -> UPS tab->Firmware update and it probably will tell you the output power needs to be turned off. it is very important to consider if your network connection to the AP9630 is powered by the UPS that you may want to move it since the UPS output needs to be turned off. thus you will lose access to the NMC to turn the UPS power back on. once you get to this screen, click help on the top right and let me know if you see the instructions.
you basically have to FTP the firmware image to the upsfw folder on the NMC then go back to this screen to start the upgrade. if the firmware is put there correctly and can be updated, the screen will show an update as available and give you an option to start it after you turn the UPS output off.

Greetings. I found the help instructions and will attempt to figure out how to do it. My knowledge of how to FTP to the NMC is limited but I will give it a go:
The update file I found was a file named "PowerNet MIB v4.0.7" that, when I try to download, it comes up as what looks to be textual code that needs to be compiled. Is that the file and how does it need to be saved?

Thanks for the file! The 4.0.7 MIB file came from the support/software and firmware downloads page after specifying the SMT3000 hardware part number. I'll let you know how this works out. If you can share, how does one get access to the location/directory that the file that you provided me is located at?

i went to http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ and searched for FA164737. then i downloaded the .exe file that you'd normally use over serial or USB. then, i extracted the .exe file using a Winzip/7 zip type of utility. so within there is the folder of firmware update images that the utility uses if you use the utility. so basically, all of the information you need for UPS updates is currently only in the knowledge base and NOT where you get NMC updates. confusing, i know 😞 lol

Thank you sir! I was able to ftp the file onto the NMC and will have to wait until my wife gets off the computer so I can reconfigure the power to be able to turn the APC off. I am pretty sure it will work now and will update the status of this thread later. I hope that the other fellow who commented here is getting information he needs as well! Have a great evening!

sorry to push my way into this, but I do have a question. I have downloaded and extracted the firmware files, I think there are 9 files. But in looking at the firmware matrix, and the firmware file names, I am a little unsure of which ones to use. I think I've got it figured out but I'm not certain. We have about 40 that could be upgraded, most are remote to me, and they're a mix of 750s, 1000s, 1500s, 2200s, and one smx-3000. All webcards are 5.1.7, so the upgrade through the web interface option is available. I think I've seen that if the firmware file is not the proper one for the ups, the upgrade is basically ignored, it's not destructive and doesn't brick the ups. Is that correct? Thanks for any advice. Chris

Hi Chris,
Are all of the UPSs that you mention - "750, 1000, 1500, 2200" all SMT or SMX like the SMX3000 you mentioned? I ask because the older style UPSs are not upgradable but you can easily confirm this because if your UPS does not support an upgrade, then you won't see the firmware upgrade option under the web UI under UPS->Firmware Upgrade.
we can figure out what version is correct for you. what I would do is go to UPS->About in the web UI. if you have the information available there about the current versions, i can probably tell you what the correct upgrade is or verify it if you think you already know.
i agree with your statement on pushing the wrong file. i dont think it will accept it but it is just as easy to help you verify what you're pushing first if you want.

Great, managed to get a result, UPS now reports...
UPS 07.1 / MCU 05.0 / UBL 7.20 / MBL 05.0 (ID17)
Had to remember as a Mac user to a 'bin' before the transfer or it just would fail. I take it the ID17 is used to identify the file extracted from the Windows update program?
Anyway it all worked for me and it may be worth an FAQ update to mention that if you have an NMC then there is an alternative method.
Thanks 🙂

In a way... the UPS version and ID, taken together, identifies a single firmware. For instance there can be several UPS 07.1, each for different hardware, but there's only one UPS 07.1 (ID17). The other version numbers (MCU, UBL, and MBL) are extraneous and won't be reported in the future.

Yep, all of the ones I mentioned are the newer SMTs or SMX. I do have a list of them in a spreadsheet, and I have extracted the firmware files from the archive. I think I understand the naming of the files, but I do want to be sure.
If you wouldn't mind, I can send the spreadsheet with all the pertinent info, and also make note of which firmware file to ftp to the webcard. Should make it pretty simple to verify. Once again, I am being a little cautious (right now, anyway).
Thank you, chris
