there are 3 APC USB to Serial cables
940-0272 (No smart-Signaling)
AP9584 (No smart-Signaling)
AP9833 (Yes smart-Signaling)
there is not much information and manual available on internet.
i would be helpfull if anyone could confirm which one is best in terms of vast compatibility with ups especially smart series UPS and upto date drivers (Xp, vista , win7 etc).
AND WHICH CABLE SUPPORTS Terminal Emulation ( COMMUNICATING USING TERMINAL PROGRAM such as Hperterminal).

we need to know what UPS you are using. the specific UPS model is on the back or the bottom of the device on a white sticker. then we can explain what's what. thanks.

oh ok, you can use a USB to serial adapter with our serial to serial cable so to the UPS, you will still be using serial communications. there is just no USB connection on the UPS.
you probably want to look at something like this device (serial to USB adapter): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5086843&CatId=464
i have experience with ATEN products but i am just using that for reference. then, usually those devices require a driver installed. so you'd connect the USB end to your computer and then connect one end of the APC serial cable to the DB-9 end and the other end to the serial port on the UPS.

The UPS's that you have uses the serial port to communicate with a PC that is running PCBE. The part numbers of the cable that would work is 940-0024 or 940-1524. These are Smart Signaling Serial (DB9) to Serial (DB9) cable and works with HyperTerminal. 940-0024 is 6' while the 1524 is 15'

yes, those models, as JonPro said, require serial cables. USB communication isnt supported with any cable.
