USB to RJ50 cable with SMC 1000C
I have the SMC C-1000C and it has 3 data connections on the back.
USB Type-A, Ethernet and RJ50
I'm not sure what the Type-A slot is for since peripherals usually have type-B.
I bought a replacement cable (two actually, from 2 vendors) off amazon for APC USB to RJ50.
Nothing happens when I plug it in to the computer. Is there supposed to be a device detected, or anything show up in device manager? I don't get how you're supposed to pick a com port for a usb cable.
I tried installing a usb to serial driver from APC's website, but it just said SUCCESS and no details.

The RJ45 (Green) port is used to connect the unit to APC’s (Smart Connect) cloud portal service. This is a subscription service that allows remote monitoring, control, updates, and historical (logging) recall.
The RJ50 port is used to connect over a serial connection using a APC proprietary cable. Using an incorrect cable will typically cause the UPS to shut down. You can purchase or make the same cable just by googling for the same. 👍
This cable is primarily used to connect to the UPS using a terminal program like Putty to interact over the (CLI) to adjust, view, restore parameters within the system.
It is also used to update the firmware on the main unit.
The USB port is (intended) to be used with APC Power Chute software. Once installed and connected to a computer system it can manage the shut down sequence, schedule, reboot, if and when required. If Power Chute software is used the required USB drivers will be installed during the installation process.
If you’re using third party software like NUT you will need to define the drivers, connection type, etc.
NOTE: APC indicates only one serial (physical) connection can be used at any given time. ☝️
