The APC UPS 3000 showing a P.17 fault code indicates a bypass relay weld error

We're getting a p.17 error code and alerts from the unit.  We tried to clear the code using the following procedures listed below. We suspect a power surge may have caused the problem. Since its happening again we're assuming the unit could be damaged. PLease advise

We tried this already on 6/13/25 and 6/20/25 when the error came back that morning.

  1. Clear the Fault Code
    • From the LCD menu, navigate to Diagnostics or Event Log and use the โ€œClearโ€ or โ€œResetโ€ option.
    • If unsuccessful, power-cycle the UPS: fully shut down, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, and power up.
  2. Run a โ€œBrain Deadโ€ Reset
    • Also known as a hard reset or cold start, this clears any residual internal faults. On many models:
      • Disconnect both input & output power.
      • Remove the battery.
      • Wait ~1โ€“2 minutes.
      • Reinstall battery, reconnect power, and restart UPS.community.se.com+1apc.com+1
  3. Inspect or Replace Bypass Relay Assembly
    • If the fault persists or recurs soon after reset, the bypass relay hardware may be physically welded.
    • Contact APC/Schneider or a certified service center for relay inspection or replacement.
  4. Test Thoroughly Post-Repair
    • After clearing the fault, perform a Full Self-Test via the LCD: confirm the unit switches cleanly and no new errors appear.

If the equipment is still under warranty contact APC Technical Support to initiate a RMA. If the unit is not under warranty than it really depends upon what standards your company operates under. If your company follows the most stringent ISO standards than the hardware will need to be replaced.

If its less stringent that you may consider shipping the hardware out to an APC Authorized Repair Facility such as https://coasttec.com/service/repair-and-return/

If you don't follow any ISO standards than you may consider sending the unit out to any electronics facility to have them replace all of the relays in the unit. Don't simply replace the failed welded relay because you're simply living on borrowed time!

Replace all of the relays and obviously have them inspect and test all of the MOV, GDT, Fuse, in the SPD circuit.
