Symmetra PX 80KVA Error: Cannot switch to bypass

Hello,

Good day.

What does this error mean: *"Cannot switch to bypass; the input voltage or frequency is not within its defined limits"*
Getting this error from a Symmetra PX 80KVA unit.

Thanks

This specific error appears at the majority of cases when a power outage has occured or if a generator has a problem(frequency or voltage irregularities due to governors or DVR faults). The meaning of this error is to warn the user/operator that if at that time the ups has an overload then it wouldn't go to bypass so it will drop the load. And of course it's perfectly normal.

Now if that error appears without any signs of power outage or voltage drop or any irregularities then you should check the static bypass module or download the MIM'S history log to help you see some more information

Hi,

I am not a three phase expert but essentially this means that if the UPS were to go to bypass, it'd probably turn off because the mains input voltage or frequency is too high or too low to go to bypass. A lot of times we see this with generators, when they fire up, because they may start putting out a really high or low voltage or a low/high frequency.

Can you find out what your input voltage and frequency is?

Thanks for the reply.

Let me check the voltage and frequency input value I have and will reply back again. Just in case, is there a way
for me to adjust the settings on the UPS itself to tolerate whatever actual value I have?

Thanks agaian

I have access to a 40kVA management card and I did not see anything in there...

We received the same message during a brownout during a thunderstorm this week.

from wikipedia:

Blackout
where power is lost completely. While the word "blackout" is one of the most common colloquial terms, "Load shedding" or a rolling blackout refers specifically to a controlled way of rotating available generation capacity between various districts or customers, thus avoiding wide area total blackouts.

Brownout
where the voltage level is below the normal minimum level specified for the system. Systems supplied with three-phase electric power also suffer brownouts if one or more phases are absent, at reduced voltage, or incorrectly phased. Such malfunctions are particularly damaging to electric motors. Some brownouts, called voltage reductions, are made intentionally to prevent a full power outage.

Dropout
where the loss of power is only momentary (milliseconds to seconds).

This message is normal when there is a power outage or brown out. The unit should also show a fault light on. This does not mean there is necessarily something wrong with the UPS but that something is wrong overall. In this case the fault indicates the input voltage being low..usually zero for freq and voltage. If the outage or power event is more than a blip you will see the yellow "On Battery" light illuminated on the UPS Power View until input power returns to normal.

The message indicates you cant xfer the load to utility (go to bypass) because there is partial or no bypass voltage.

You can check input voltage from the PowerView displays on the XPDU and the UPS. Its possible a voltage sense board can go bad or need to be calibrated if your input voltage is actually within limits.

I would suggest to check quality of the power line by a good tool like current clamp.
