Smart UPS 750VA doesn't come with AVR - do I need one seperately?

I currently have a surge protector but shopping for a UPS with AVR preferably. I love these APC UPS and happen to get a good deal for Smart UPS 750VA. However, I learn that it doesn't come with built-in AVR. Any ideas why they don't include that since it's such an expensive UPS? I would be using it for my home PC so do I need to get a seperate AVR in this case or the UPS alone is sufficient?

Any help or thoughts is appreciated.

Thanks for your help. I was browsing through the product link and I can't seem to see anywhere it says the AVR is included:

Btw, how reliable is this UPS? Does it break down easily and can it be repaired in future if there are no more wararnty?

If your refering to the SUA750, this unit definitely has AVR with boost and trim. I did see that it isn't mentioned on the APC website under technical specifications or product info, but if you check pages 3 and 6 of the manual found here:

it refers to the AVR boost and trim leds as well the high and low transfer points for AVR, sorry that this wasn't made more clear.

While I cant speake directly for the international models (we are in the US), the smart up SUA750 is very reliable and will give you years of service. It usually only needs a battery replacement after a few years.

There are no parts available for it as it is not a modular UPS, or contain field-repalceable items like our larger ups' do.

Most of our computer users have the previous version, the SU700, underneath our desks for years now. Some units are as old as 10 years old!!

Hey guys, I just got my Smart UPS 750. However, I have some questions:

1. I am using it on my desktop PC only so which Powerchute software should I install? I believe I don't need to install the Agent software?
2. I hook up my LCD and CPU so how much runtime would it be able to give me in case of a power failure? Is there a way to tell?
3. How long does it take for the battery to be fully charged?
4. Can I use my Belkin surge protector together with this UPS? Wall plug to Surge protector then to UPS?

Hi Powerguy...

You would need to actually install JUST the Agent of PowerChute Business Edition, if you don't want to install the Server/Console (graphical GUI).

To access the agent for configuration and information, it would be:
http://127.0.0.1:3052

That will also tell you what your load and runtime available is.

And no, you cannot put a surge protector upstream from the UPS. You would need a residential panelmount surge in order for that to be valid. You can only use an APC Surge protector downstream of the UPS, so that in the event of equipment damage, if it occurs, APC is the only brand you are using, and noone points fingers at the other.

Thanks Notorious K 🙂 I've learned a lot from you certainly. I believe there's no harm in turning the UPS on/off everyday as I wouldn't want to leave it on all the time. It makes some noise when I turn it on sometimes so just wanted to make sure it does no harm in the long run as I know UPS is meant to stay up 24x7.

I've installed the Agent and patched it for my Vista32 but Internet Explorer doesn't like it. I've included it in my safe list but I still can't logon as the bottom status bar of IE says there an "Error in the page". I guess I need to install the console somehow?

You mean I can install a surge protector of other brands before my UPS but it will be at my own risk? I just need to know if it does any danger by doing so?

The error on page is usually a Java issue....you could update java and see if that fixes it.

As far as the surge protector, the only problem with it is that because it's a protector, not a distributor, if you have other devices plugged in as well, they're all competing for the same power.

Thanks again. I also happen to notice there are some electric buzzing sound coming out from the UPS. Is this normal?

Is the buzzing while the UPS is online, on battery, or while it's been charging the battery?

Is there anything within 3 feet of it like a monitor or tower that could cause some EMI?

It seems to be alright now but had some buzzing during battery recharge. Is this normal?
I have my subwoofer about 5 inches at the side of my UPS. Could that cause EMI?

Usually the recommended distance is 36 inches. I'm sure you made a nice investment in the speaker setup powered by the UPS, so chances are yes, there is something causing EMI from the subwoofer to the UPS.

The noise it makes at startup is the transfer switch kicking in for the self-test, then you hear the hum while it's on battery, then the transfer switch going back to an online state.

Thanks a lot 🙂 You've been really helpful to be honest. I have a small table so maybe I need to figure out where can I put this UPS (far from my Klipsch Promedia GMX).
Btw, I turn my UPS and wall plug power off everytime I shut down my PC. When I turn the UPS back on after the wall plug, it will always discharge a little of it's battery. Is this normal? Is it better to leave the UPS on 24x7 or will turning off/on makes it have a shorter lifespan?

The discharge of the battery is normal. The topology of the UPS is to constantly provide power to the receptacles, but at the same time, trickle charging the battery. When you use the UPS as a master on/off or turn it off when not in use, and the battery stays connected, it will begin a discharge process. It may just be that it drops from 100% to say 98 or 97%, and that's why the 5 LED's are not full when you turn it back on.
