SU700NET - Dead or ??

Good Day! New to the forums here, with a few questions. I have 5 SmartUPS and BackUPS running here at the house flawlessly, but recently one of my 700NET's took a nose dive. Since documentation is scarce at best, I hope ya'll can help me....

I have a new battery pack in the SU700NET, during plugged in operation i have the "on-line" LED lit and 100% battery LED's. Problem is when I pull the plug from the wall (to simulate power outage), or hit the TEST button, the unit powers off and I get no battery backup.

This condition happens weather I test it on a computer / monitor (75% load), or just plug in a household lamp (0% load lights). I can not get this thing to power on battery back up.

Additionally, sometimes on re plugging in the unit, the "on-line" LED and the "on-battery" LED will flash rapidly together, and I will hear the internal relay trying to switch over.

I posted a video of the unit not switching to battery power:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-iPlTAop2U

Any help would be great....

Z

Hello,

You can contact APC's only authorized UPS repair service, Coastal Business Machines, at 1-888-234-9877. They will be able to fix the parts and basically do a factory restore for you, and also give you a two year warranty with them, for a fraction of the price of the Trade-UPS. If you're looking to hold onto that workhorse, you may want to go that route.

Hey Notorious.....

Thanks so much. With that information, I would have to go along with that. I did not realize the possiblity existed for such a relay to go bad (...or I didn't want to believe it could).

Looks like I'll head on over to trade up, unless someone suggests parts, etc.... before Monday... ๐Ÿ™‚ (I guess I'm cheap, LoL)

Thanks for posting, I appreciated it very much.

SU700NET is no longer made, so I'm guessing it wasn't a warranty. Do you mind if I ask how much this end up costing you?

I wish I was able to get to this thread sooner. The symptoms you're describing is exactly what you'd get from a very worn out battery.

This was not done as an APC repair, it was done through coastal business machines. However, the symptoms originally described were a load drop without any transfer to battery. Even customers who have batteries that are 8-10 years old will be able to transfer to battery for approximately 5 seconds. This instance however, was an instantaneous drop upon loss of utility power, indicative that it was not the battery.

I disagree. What described happens all the time on units I serviced. It all depends on the history of that UPS's battery. The battery can develop a very high internal resistance from wear/abuse(usually storage w/o semi-annual replenishment).

Smart-UPS monitors voltage at battery terminals and if there is none, it will not allow power-on. If the battery is severely worn down, it's possible for it to have the voltage to turn on, but sharply drop upon under load.

Inverter failure is not common. At this point, the correct diagnostic procedure is to measure the instantaneous floor voltage of the battery pack on bench in refurb/repair operation..

for end users.. take battery pack to dealer. ask for load test.

If it's the inverter, the battery will pass, if it fails the load test, new pack will do 99% of the time.

Hey Gang!

I'm back.... I emailed Coastal Business Machines. They are very nice, but I did not feel the "deal" was there for me. I have several of these "work horse" units, and love 'em to death.

They told me $99.00 for a refurb unit, and they would pay to have mine shipped back. -or- I could pay about the same, send mine in, they refurb my unit, and send it back. In other words I was getting no credit for mine.

Although this seems like an OK deal, I am pressing on with finding parts to rebuild the two I have broken now. I have the ability and knowledge to get to "componet" electrical level if need be. I was just hoping for a quick solution.

Logic points to the battery (and that was also Coatal's first guess), but when I switch this battery pack to a "known good" 700NET, it switches and they carry the load fine. Thus, I suspect an internal failure of something related to circuit detection or inverter.

So I don't know, maybe we all need to group together and discuss rebuilding out units ourselves.....or with help of those here.

PS: I have another SU700NET, new batt pack that will not even power on. All "standard" problematic issues checked already... CB, etc..... I 'll have to start a thread on that one soon too.

Hello,

Sorry you did not like the deal CBM gave you. Keep in mind that they would refurb it all for less than a hundred dollars, when I believe the price on a new SUA750 is around 350 or so.

Also, if you're going to discuss fixing these yourself, I know KVAR will have some input, and I ask for the purpose of these boards being present, that any information pertaining to you two discussing fixing these, just be done in private messaging. Unfortunately we won't be able to help with part numbers or pricing, as APC will not sell parts alone (and neither will CBM), but I'm sure KVar has a way of obtaining parts and numbers that will be beneficial to you.

Hello again Notorious K,

Thanks so much for the great info and hospitality toward me here.

If I did not have two of these broke units sitting here, I would buy a SU700NET from CBM. $99 is a steal on one of those, and I can vouch the units step up when needed. At home alone, I am running seven (yes 7).

In my business of car parts, I always allow for a return part if it benefits me and the customer. If i can allow them a "trade" or "core" value, refurb it, and sell it as such, his cost goes down and my profit goes up. Win - Win.

I can get a 700NET from CBM for $99 whether I trade my old unit or not. The only benefit to me is they would pay the shipping on the broke unit to "get it off my hands". A free shipping value is not enough to get it since I can fix it for that is my bet..... and with 7 units, I really can't add to the fleet or wifey will kill me.

So sorry for the long explaination. I have NO beef with CBM, in fact I will use them when the time is right for me. Mr Jon over there emailed me back within a few hours, with a complete explaination of his thoughts, ON A SUNDAY!!! WOW. If I had employees that would do that, I'd rule the world. (LoL). Seriously though, very nice touch to customer satisfaction.

I can't allow $700 in my budget over the next year to keep these things running. (since they are starting to give way) This is my main motivation to find parts and "refurb" the units myself and save as much of that as I can.

If the battery pack is good, pull it and keep for later use. I would imagine the refurb unit comes equipped with new batteries and ready to use and you'll even have current pack as a spare, that will stay good for many years, as long as you top them off every six months or so.

So, for $200 shipped for two SU700NET replacement units, I'd just go ahead and get 'em.

.
Thanks Kvar..... Would you say I can not do this myself for less than $200 to bring my current units back to life?

:-)

I guess my goal is my least expensive way to keep them in service. Right now I still believe that refurb units, although attractive, are my 2nd choice.

Thanks!
