Hi
I bought a SRT3000RMXLI unit. There seems to be an onboard NIC included (not the optional extra NMC)
When i connect the RJ45 outlet to a (100MBit) switch nothing happens: no link, no light
I then assumed that the onboard NIC is deactivated for whatever reason and hooked up a serial cable to the serial RJ outlet with the included APC cable. Can't get it to work at all. Windows Desktop with native serial port via putty 9600 / 8 / 1stop / 0flow: nothing happens - blank screen after several [return]. Connecting to a firewall via the same port and putty worked (different cable and settings though).
When I connected the serial cable used for the firewall to the UPS, it immediately turned off (is this supposed to happen?)
Further when the UPS is turned on there is a noticeable buzzing sound, i have 2 other UPS here on site with similar specifications that are quiet (excluding fan, of course)
The printout of the quality assurance test states that MAC Address and Ethernet Connectivity tests have passed.
Any ideas regarding the onboard NIC, the buzzing sound and the serial connection issues?
The included manual mentions no onboard NIC, just models with included NMS. Inside the manual under rear panel features no model is shown with onboard NIC, but my model has one: right below the RJ Serial Port and above the EPO Terminal
I completely stumped, I have no idea what to do next. There is a NIC with a passed quality assurance test but yet i cannot use it nor do I find proper documentation regarding it.

Hi Liam,
thank you very much for your great answer. I probably should haveRTFM. After reading your linkedpdf I came to the conclusion that I my nonAPC serial cable must have caused a positive voltage on Pin 9 as it was connected to PC Pin1. (table 4 from manual: Pin 9 "Application of positive voltage for >= 0.25 seconds turns off the UPS immediately.")
regarding the humming sound: thanks again for your explanation, I'm perfectly fine with that
I was in a hurry when ordering the product and just used a LAN filter on an online price search engine so I wrongfully assumed PowerChute Network functionality was included

You are also right regarding the plastic cap on the ethernet jack
I'll give up with serial communication, as the UPS is already productive and i cannot risk another unplanned downtime and just buy the NMC you mentioned for the required network shutdown
best regards
Paul

Hi Paul,
Your unit does not feature an onboard NIC. If you need network management capability the appropriate Network Management Card would be the AP9630. There is an ethernet port on the UPS that is not currently enabled and is included for potential future use. I believe when you received the unit it had a cap over it. There is no way currently to enable that port.
When using the serial port, it is important to use the serial cable (Part #940-0625) included with the UPS. If you connect a standard pass through serial cable, the UPS will turn off as you mentioned.
It is normal for the units to make some humming sound, although it shouldn't be overly loud. You may find that the load attached to the UPS can affect the volume or tone of the sound the UPS makes. This is due to the way the power supply of the load interacts with the inverter of the UPS. When comparing sound levels to other UPS units, make sure you are comparing to other double conversion units (IE: Smart-UPS SURT or SRT). Smart-UPS products are designed for computer room type use, so they may seem noisy if you are trying to use them in a quiet environment. If the sound seems dramatically louder than other similar units, I would suggest contacting your local tech support team.
If you are looking for more detailed information on communications with Smart-UPS, you might find this App Note helpful:
