today something strange occurred:
on a 3 month old (new) UPS during a scheduled self test both dell R430 servers that are attached to it lost power for a few seconds
the UPS webinterface (equipped with NMC) logs show test passed:
00:20:31 Device UPS: Self-Test started by automatic timer.
00:20:52 Device UPS: Self-Test passed.
no other relevant warnings or errors can be seen in the UPS log
the drac logs from both R430 servers show 2 entries each: one with power lost and 4 seconds later there is a power restored event
there is no data connection between the server and the ups, the drac logs are from sensors inside the power supplies. The servers each have 2 redundant power supplies which were (unfortunately) both connected to the UPS (probably within the same outlet group).
The UPS is a Smart-UPS SRT 3000 in green mode with a typical load of 12% VA in a A/C controlled dust free area with above average power grid (located in western europe)
According to FAQ & google a self test should not power cycle the devices behind the UPS, and all prior automated self tests did not cause that behaviour.
Since owning the UPS no power outage occurred, and I do not think that I ever tested the device without A/C power
Could that be a defective UPS? Any advice? I've never experienced a defective APC unit in my 20 years so I also have no clue about warranty or being eligible for support - I just bought the unit and did not care about service contracts

My only other thought, if it is possible to check, would be to verify that any attached device shows this behavior. Meaning if you plug in a clock radio or something basic (that supports the plug types on the UPS), does the same thing occur?
SRT is an online UPS so it should not have any transfer time - which transfer to battery which can cause problems for certain types of equipment but that should not be the case here...
I know you have redundant power supplies and don't expect you to check this necessarily and put your load at risk but I was wondering if the UPS was causing the server to power down vs. reboot which I would think you can only tell if you try with a single power supply. Or might see with another device you can try to plug in as I had suggested.

Defiantly a faulty UPS, you need to check if it is in warranty as support will probably arrange a swap if new batteries do not help. I think it is 3 years on the UPS and 2 on the battery.
