Looking at a SMT-1500, need to monitor a PC and NAS

Like the title states, I need to monitor a pc and a NAS. I see there are two ports (USB port and UPS monitoring port). Can I use both ports individually (one for the pc, and one for the NAS) to monitor each and gracefully bring each down in the event of a power outtage?

If that is not possible, is there a recommended solution?

via USB, yes. only one supported unit. you can use USB and serial at the same time on this unit though if you had a serial connection.

you are also only supposed to use USB/serial OR a network management card.

rats.

I can't believe I'm saying this but it appears I'm in the market for a serial card to install on a win7 box. That's almost embarrassing to type.

What you can do is to connect the PC into the UPS using either USB or Serial(UPS Monitoring Port) and installing PowerChute Business Edition. Using PCBE, you can run scripts that could possible turn off your NAS.

If your UPS comes with a network management card, it is equipped to send SNMP traps. The software that works with an NMC (network management card) is PowerChute Network Shutdown which can also run scripts.

which model NAS do you have by the way? some models support USB and serial connectivity for shutdown, others use SNMP like JonPro mentioned.

Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4. It supports USB connectivity for shutdown as does the PC. There is where the problem lies. Need the PC to gracefully shut down as well as the NAS, and it sounds like only one can be brought down without an add in card to the UPS.

Interesting.

I can't seem to find a good picture of the serial cable, but from the information I'm able to drum up it appears to be an RJ-45 to Serial cable. Is there another RJ-45 cable terminated with something other than serial that would support the same transmission of data? For example, my current APC has an RJ-45 to USB cable. Could that be used to replace the serial cable?

negative. the ports have different pinouts. the RJ-45 to serial cable you refer to is correct - part # 940-0625A for the 6 foot or 940-1525A for the 15 foot version.

the other cable is AP9827 and only works with some Back UPS and older Smart UPS.

LOL i understand that. you will want to use the powerchute business edition software if you do pursue this to get a graceful shutdown. you just need to install the single node agent to talk to the UPS via serial.

if you have enough runtime and don't care about a graceful shutdown on your computer, then you can skip this cable and do most of your voltage monitoring, etc via the front LCD.

what exactly do you want to monitor? voltage, alerts, etc?

I'm back Angela (spoke to you over 3 years ago about this product)!  Still using the SMT-1500 and its been fantastic.  However, I'm moving to a new computer that does not have a serial connection nor does it have room for a serial card.  Can I use the AP9827 (RJ45-USB) cable to connect the pc to the UPS?

I currently have the native USB port connected to my Windows Server 2012 server and it recognizes how full the battery is.  Can I use that second cable (the AP9827) to connect the RJ45 port to my Windows 8 desktop to identify the status of the battery?

Hi,

The AP9827 will not work with the SMT. Your options are

1 - purchase a USB to serial converter (I use a Hawking but there are many others that work)

2 - purchase a network management card and switch from USB native to PowerChute Network Shutdown

3 - script the Windows Server to send shutdown signal to the Windows 8 system

Hi there, I have the very same situation and want to link me in into this topic:

In my case, I too have the SMT1500I Smart UPS which is connected on the USB port to my Server, which runs the Powerchute Business Server and Agent so that a clean shutdown is possible.

Now I want to be able to also shut down my Workstation, which is also powered by theUPS, gracefully. But this workstation doesnt have a seriell port. For that reason i purchased the AP9827 cable, which is also listed as optional communication on the product page (see attachment). So i doubt the statement above, that the AP9827 cable doen't work with the SMT model is right. However, on installting the Powerchute Agent on the workstation, it doesnt recognize the UPS and no communication is established...

I have to say, that i bought the AP9827 cable on Amazon (APC UPS Datenanschlusskabel extern USB auf RJ45: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör) and on the cable it is printed 940-0127E. Well is this the "right" AP9827 cable? Or is the pinning wrong? Would I get an other cable if i buy directly from apc?

What can i do to get a gracefull shutdown working on my workstation without buying an huge expensiv network management card or seriell port card for my workstation? (besides my server has no seriell port, too.)

Thanks.2147_ap9827.JPG

Hi,

AP9827 is the sales SKU and 940-0127E is the manufacturing part number so they are 1 in the same.

As for compatibility with the SMT, I have tested the cable and find it to not be compatible. I will verify this information with product management and up date this thread.

so any news so far? Cause I'm about to send the cable back to Amazon and need clarification. Thank you.

I have verification that the cable is not compatible with the Smart-UPS. It was mistakenly entered as an option on the web site. Our web services team is working to correct the error.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
