What is the procedure for the initial charging of the battery on a SMC 1500? I’d assume it would be the same for all of them but that’s what I have. I find it hard to understand why there’s not one word on the subject in the manuals. Will it charge in the pwr off mode, does it require pwr on with the load unplugged or can the load be plugged in but be turned off and how long does it take?

Not sure how long it takes.
Yes, as long as the UPS is plugged in, the charger will maintain the battery regardless of whether the UPS is "output on" or not. The load can but does not need to be attached.
