I work for Compucom Systems in Modesto,ca which is outsourced for EJ Gallo Winery in Modesto,ca. I have about 275 Smart UPS systems I need to get model numbers for so I can look up what battery type they take. Unfortunately the previous employee who had this project before me chose to use a generic model number on most of the UPS names. For example, Take a Smart UPS 750 XL, well he would put "SMART UPS 750 XL" When in fact it’s a "SUA750XL" or something similar. You need to know I am not near any of these UPS's to read the model number from the white label on the back. Almost all of these are at remote sales locations, Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago ect... So here in lies the problem. How do I Obtain Correct model numbers based off of serial numbers alone? I do have correct Serial numbers on all the UPS's as well as all of the correct IP address's to telnet into the UPS's. So far Tech support Via Chat and Phone have told me this is not possible and I have to physically be at each of the UPS's.

hi,
it is kind of true. with just the serial numbers, we cannot tell the exact model of the UPS unless we have it in our troubleshooting database and can look it up - that is probably not the case for you though. we can tell you by the letters in the serial numbers what the device is. so if a serial number starts with "JS," the 'S' tells us its a Smart UPS. so anything that has an 'S' as the second character is at least a Smart UPS. other than that, we cannot tell anything else without already having it on file, or MAYBE if it was registered which is rare.
you said you can telnet or web into the devices. in there, you should be able to see information kind of like what you mentioned which is maybe where the previous person got it from. the web/telnet interfaces will say something like Smart UPS 750 XL and give the serial number. we can probably get you the likely model numbers on those and if not, if we can find out what color the UPS is or what U size it is in the rack, we can probably be 100% sure.
So like a Smart UPS 1400 would be an SU1400 because we dont make SUA1400s. A Smart UPS 2200 XL would have to be an SUA2200XL. If it said RM in that description it'd be a rackmount UPS.
We can definitely try to help you out if you can get those or if you have the list handy with what is already written down and what we can get in the software/network management cards.
