Did my Runtime Calibration complete properly?

I have a Symmetra 80K and I ran a runtime calibration for the first time, perhaps ever.

In the event log I see:

Date Time User Event

2022-06-2900:06:08DeviceUPS: Runtime no longer below selected threshold.
2022-06-2823:49:05DeviceUPS: A low battery condition no longer exists.
2022-06-2823:49:03DeviceUPS: The battery power is too low to continue to support the load; the UPS will shut down if input power does not return to normal soon.
 2022-06-2823:48:57DeviceUPS: Runtime calibration canceled.
 2022-06-2823:47:52DeviceUPS: Runtime below selected threshold.
 2022-06-2823:41:16DeviceUPS: Started a runtime calibration.
 2022-06-2812:25:17DeviceUPS: Passed a self-test.
 2022-06-2812:24:16DeviceUPS: Started a self-test.

Is this normal?

I'm asking specifically because I had done many self-tests in the past, and they always log a 'Started' and 'Passed' event to the log, which I included one of for reference above.

The Runtime Cal, though, logs a 'Start' event , and then a 'canceled'.  I would maybe expect it to say 'complete' or 'Passed', instead of canceled.

The RED led was lit at the end of the cal too.  Though I suspect that was just because the runtime available was below alert threshold at the end of the cal which I did expect.

I was wondering if the low-runtime alert threshold causes a cal to 'cancel'.  But it's over a minute apart so I doubt it.

Hi,

You can find a FAQ document which discusses this topic here:

https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156154/

I hope this helps!

PS the calibration will stop prematurely under certain conditions (i.e mains failure during the test). When low DC (or fuel <25%) is reached during the calibration it will mark the end of the test.

Thank you Al! your knowledge of these products is excellent!!!

I read FA156154 though and it explains an error in how the Gen 1 NMCs (AP9617, AP9618, AP9619) report calibration events.

The FA notes that it does not apply to AP9630, which is the NMC we have, Hardware Revision 05 running sy3p v7.0.4 on aos v7.0.4.

I'm very tempted to retry calibration again to duplicate the error. But I've also read that we should only do it once a year and the implication is it damages the remaining lifetime of the batteries.

On the diagnostic tests screen, I see:
Self-Test
Passed on June 29, 2022
Calibration
Not Available on June 28, 2022

In the NMC event log, I see:
Date Time User Event
2022-06-29 18:08:12 Device UPS: Passed a self-test.
2022-06-29 18:07:02 Device UPS: Started a self-test.
2022-06-29 00:06:08 Device UPS: Runtime no longer below selected threshold.
2022-06-28 23:49:05 Device UPS: A low battery condition no longer exists.
2022-06-28 23:49:03 Device UPS: The battery power is too low to continue to support the load; the UPS will shut down if input power does not return to normal soon.
2022-06-28 23:48:57 Device UPS: Runtime calibration canceled.
2022-06-28 23:47:52 Device UPS: Runtime below selected threshold.
2022-06-28 23:41:16 Device UPS: Started a runtime calibration.
2022-06-28 12:25:17 Device UPS: Passed a self-test.
2022-06-28 12:24:16 Device UPS: Started a self-test.
2022-06-28 06:10:11 Device UPS: Passed a self-test.
2022-06-28 06:08:59 Device UPS: Started a self-test.

I want the runtime displayed on the UPS to be as accurate as possible. So I'd like to know that runtime cal completed successfully. I reviewed the logs on the lcd display on the front of the symmetra and noted that simple self tests are logged as "On Batt" and then "Self Test Passed". The calibration was logged as: (In Order)

Runtime Cal Started

On Batt

Runtime Below Limit

Runtime Cal Stopped

Low-Battery

Online

Battery Recharged

Runtime Above Limit

The word "stopped" is what I'm not sure about... if it should say 'Passed' perhaps.

Hi,

I've been working with the PX since its inception so I've picked up a few tidbits of knowledge over the years :). The calibration won't log a status of "passed" because it's not really a test that passes or fails. Its sole purpose  is to adjust the runtime on the front display. Its there because the UPS does not auto adjust the runtime based on battery performance during normal operation unless there is a deep discharge (100% to 25% capacity) of the batteries  (either though the calibration or an extended power outage). Based on the duration of the calibration you should be able to estimate the total runtime and compare it to what you see on the display. I suspect it will be pretty accurate. Hope this helps!
