Cabling between a Console Port server and a Console Port Cisco/Juniper

Hi everybody.

So first of all, i would like to apologize for my bad english because i'm french !

I have an Ap9301 Console Port Server.
I configure it like it's written in the guide but i can access to any device connected.

So i plugged a crossover cable between the console port of a Cisco device and a port of the AP9301.
Then i tested with a straight through cable but i have the same probleme.
I have the message to log in when i make a telnet on the 7001 port (for example). After i enter the login and password, nothing happens.

Do i need a special cable made by APC ?? If i do, which one i have to buy ?

Thank you very much

Hi,

According to Cisco.com, that switch has a RJ-45 console port. That means you have a few options to connect that port to a port on the CPS:

1. Get a db9 adapter for the cisco console cable
2. Buy the APC part # AP9315 and use a straight through CAT5 cable with that
3. Make a standard CAT5 rollover cable.

I would think #3 would be the cleanest solution, but if you aren't that familiar with making cables, I suggest sticking to option 2.

hi,

can you confirm what specific device model you are trying to connect to? can you see anything connected via the web interface?

when you say you configured it like in the guide - what exactly did you do?

i know we have [the cables noted on this page that are available|http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=226].

not sure if that helps..but let me know any other details if you can so we can see whats going on.

Hello

Thanks for your help.
So i tried to connect a 2950 Cisco Switch and a EX-4200 Juniper Switch to a port of the AP9301 i have.

In the AP9301 i configured the network settings, a user who has access to all port. I put the security profile to OPEN which allow protocols SSH, Telnet, HTTP and HTTPS

then i tried to connect to one of a port by the command : telnet IP_adress_of_the_CPS 7001 for the first port.

I have the login message, i log on and then i have nothing, i cannot write anymore. I tested when i put a wrong login i have an error message.

I read in [this topic|http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/5078/multiple-usvs/1#30017]th... the cable is important because the pins used by APC are not standard but i'm not sure. I saw that there is adapter like this . So it means that i cannot connect with a standard cable ?

Thanks for helping me.

i assume you have confirmed you are using the correct port speed. also, i think the prompt would come up garbled if the port speed was wrong but i am just checking. from what i have found out, it is not required to use an APC adapter.

i realize you are using telnet with this. have you tried accessing the CPS via a web browser and then launching to a port through the java applet in the web interface? does that load and get you to the same point or what? are you able to test this?

also, are you saying that you are getting prompted via the actual Cisco and juniper devices for their user names and passwords or is the CPS itself prompting you for a user name and password? i assumed it was definitely your cisco and juniper devices but i just want to be sure.

if you can tell us if the java applet works correctly from the web interface or not, this may shed a little more light on where the issue lies.

thanks!

If I am not mistaken, I believe that Cisco router uses a rollover cable for console access. This may be the problem - you've tried straight through and crossover, but not roll over?

Hello,

It's the CPS itself prompting me for a user name and password and not the Cisco device or Juniper.
I tried with the JAVA Applet and i have the same probleme

For the cable, i think you're right, usually i use a rollover cisco cable. and now i connect the cisco port console with a crossover cable. I have to buy a adapter DB-9 male to RJ-45 ??

Thanks all
