Battery and transformer too hot to touch and battery bulging

Hi,

I have a Back-UPS BX1600MI

Firmware 378600G -302202G / 01.01a (1201 - 19) Serial 9B2215A23725

PowerChute Serial Shutdown is reporting the following:

The UPS Status page reports 16.0% load and 0 minutes runtime remaining.

The battery management page reports status normal, battery charge 100%, battery voltage 22.6 VDC, runtime remaining 0 minutes.

I have copied a portion of the log file below:

3/14/25 09:19:56 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/14/25 09:19:56 Battery Discharged

3/14/25 02:50:58 Battery Charge in Range

3/14/25 02:29:51 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/14/25 01:33:08 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/14/25 01:33:06 Battery Discharged

3/14/25 01:33:05 Communication Established

3/14/25 01:33:03 Monitoring Started

3/14/25 01:30:56 Monitoring Stopped

3/13/25 23:42:42 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/13/25 23:42:11 Monitoring Stopped

3/13/25 23:31:52 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/13/25 23:31:52 Battery Discharged

3/13/25 23:28:01 Battery Charge in Range

3/13/25 23:28:01 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/13/25 22:03:52 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/13/25 00:45:37 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/12/25 17:53:53 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/12/25 17:15:40 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/12/25 01:04:10 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/12/25 00:50:40 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/11/25 22:34:59 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/11/25 22:34:59 Battery Discharged

3/11/25 20:43:00 Battery Charge in Range

3/11/25 20:41:14 Sufficient Runtime Available

3/11/25 20:25:09 Insufficient Runtime Available

3/11/25 20:25:09 Battery Discharged

The battery and transformer have been running so hot that the bottom of the plastic case has started to bulge beneath the battery.

This device has been running for just under a year and supplies a PC, two monitors and a wifi router (16%). There haven't been any power outages during that period.

I have another identical device powering a similar load (22%) which runs quite warm to the touch but not hot.

The vents on both units are clean.

Any advice appreciated.

I would suggest you check the purchase receipt as to when this hardware was bought.

As the hardware offers a three year warranty.

Based only on the serial number provided here you missed that warranty coverage by 4 days. ☹️

https://www.apc.com/ca/en/support/product-support/ups-factory-warranty-information.jsp

This is ONLY based on your serial number so if your receipt indicates a later purchase date.

Please engage APC Technical Support to initiate a RMA.

Please do follow up as to the final outcome good / bad. As I’m sure everyone would like to know how this was handled.
