Back-UPS BK650EI CS 650 doesn't startup anymore

If I switch on my CS 650 the green LED flashes about 10 seconds. After that the yellow LED should shine to indicate the begin of self test. But the yellow LED remains dark and the CS 650 switches off. That behavior can be repeated.

What is wrong and is there a chance to make the CS 650 starting normal?

How old is the unit as it sounds like a bad / weak battery. The average service life is 3-5 years in ideal conditions. Take the battery out and measure the resting voltage and report back what it is.

The battery is quite new and has a voltage of 13.55V. I also tested with another battery and even with one that works well in another UPS device.

I would suggest you connect the unit with Power Chute Personal Edition software. Once connected with the APC supplied cable initiate the self test through their software.

Report back the self test results good / bad. Should the self test fail to start using their software review the error logs and attach them here.

If there is an error code please indicate it here and also contact APC Technical Support to identify what that possible error codes means. 👍

OK, I did it with another battery that previously didn't work. The result was "good". I let Power Chute write date of battery replacement to the device's memory and since there isn't a problem with the UPS anymore. Now I'm performing a long term test for now 2 weeks and will see.

6 weeks later it's the same problem. The device shut down and doesn't start anymore. I even replaced the battery with a brand new original battery but it doesn't work.

Please share any active faults / error codes the Power Chute Software has captured. Also share a screen capture of the input / output voltage, frequency, battery load & status.

As a reminder if the hardware is still under the APC Warranty you should contact them for support and possible replacement by submitting an RMA.

If the hardware is not under warranty you can try the Brain Dead procedure to see if the unit behaves differently after doing so.

Brain Dead: Shut down and disconnect all connected loads. Remove AC Mains from the wall outlet. Disconnect the battery from the unit. Press and hold the power button until you hear a click / beep.

You may not hear anything from the unit at all too . . . ☝️

Reconnect everything except the loads and turn the unit on. Ensure the USB cable is connected to the computer system and Power Chute Software is active & running.

Press the Power button and wait for the unit to complete its Self Test. If the unit completes the self test fine check if Power Chute software confirms the same along with good input / output voltage, frequency, AVR is not active.

If the unit does NOT start after completing the brain dead procedure it’s time to consider a replacement. ☹️

Let me know what you see and observe! 👍

I can‘t upload any error codes or screen shots as the device doesn‘t start up and as the result PowerChute can‘t connect.

Brain Dead gave no noise and after that the starting behavior is the same as before. No self check and no chance to connect to PowerChute.

On the back is a resettable breaker can you check to see if it’s (popped) out? Also can you show me what the wiring looks like connecting to the batteries?

Some, not all APC UPS have a fuse connected at the battery terminal. If none is present ignore, but if there is a fuse present ensure it’s still fine and not blown open / cracked.

The breaker isn't out, the resistance between the two connectors is nearly 0 Ohm.

It has 2x 40A fuses on the PCB, F4 and F5. Both seems not to be changable (can't pulled out) but both are ok (not blown), the resistance between the pins is 0 Ohm on both.

I believe it’s time to purchase a new UPS. ☹️ You may see if your region still offers the APC trade up program to help offset some of the costs for a new unit.

From past experience there are one or more board level components that are bad / damaged on the main board. The most common are leaking / puffed up capacitors.
