AP9630 firmware upgrade 5.0.1 to 7.1.2

I have two AP9630 cards, both with firmware 5.0.1. I am trying to update the firmware so I can use one of these cards with my SMT1500RM2U. The only available firmware seems to be 7.1.2 (https://www.apc.com/us/en/download/software-firmware/). I tried updating one of the cards with the Windows firmware update tool and the other using FTP. In both cases, the upgrade succeeded for bootmon but failed for aos. The card never comes back online after the aos upgrade failure. Resetting the card using the physical reset button and attempting to connect to serial (which I was able to do before the update attempt) both fail. No response from the card. No DHCP requests made from the card to my router. The network link LED blinks orange and the status LED flashes quickly green and orange. Are these cards bricked? Is there anything I can do to recover them? There is very little documentation on this upgrade path and 6.x firmware revisions seem to no longer be available.
